Hi Colleagues

In UK we have people whose names appear on various registers, whether they
be members of Society of Homeopaths, Association of Registered Homeopaths or
UK Medical Association of Homeopaths. Perhaps such a thing happens in other
countries too.

They form a broad spectrum of practise from Hahnemannian to Combo remedy
ascending descending potencies etc. They have received their qualifications
from a variety of colleges.

The question is, how can we use these lists to chose a suitable homoeopath
for someone and would we send our dearest and nearest to them? In fact,
would we ourselves go to them?

How could these list be refined and what questions need to be put to the
homoeopath [Without appearing rude or the Sehgal followers taking the rubric
suspicious ] so that one can ascertain the mode of operation of any
colleague homoeopath?

You are, of course, correct about the registration process in the UK.
Registration is designed to inform the public that the homeopaths on the
various lists are all trained in recognised colleges, fully insured,
subscribe to a code of ethics, and have been deemed to be suuitable people
to practice with the general public. How individual homeopaths practice is
not clear within the register.

Sometime in the near future, possibly next year, the organisations you
mention, and several others, will come together under the auspices of CORH.
COHR will produce a single or a combined register (not the same thing) -
which will be much easier for the public to understand.

In my view, the real battle 'out there' is to convince more and more people
that homeopathy is a safe and effective form of medicine, and to persuade
them to abandon conventional medicine, which is neither safe nor effective.
I am not sure that too many of the 90% plus of the general public will be
too much in touch with the arguments that homeopathy has within its own
small world! Those that are will no doubt ask homeopaths on the various
lists about how they practice.

During the first part of the 20th century, homeopaths in the UK were
apparently arguing amongst themselves (mainly about potency selction
apparently) whilst conventional medicine was making itself predominant
within the early social health insurance schemes, and ultimately within the
NHS. Homeopathy was sidelined as a result. What the registration
organisations are doing, all of them, is trying to ensure that homeopathy is
self-regulated (rather than coming under statutory govemment regulation),
and that the growing number of people who are now turning to us can be
assured that they are consulting with reputable homeopaths.

Let us have our debate about the pros and cons of different homeopathic
practices, but let us not take our eyes from the main ball-game - yet again!

Dear Steve and colleagues

I do not have a major problem with what Steve has written, but ask again a
question I asked in my post.

With one of the registers in front of you, how would you select a homoeopath
to treat yourself and your children?

I think somehow the entries should show the college(s) one has attended and
also style of practise - eg Classical Hahnemannian.
Or Practical or .. Sehgal or etc

What do colleagues think please?

If we do not put in an input now, the register will again be produced along
the old lines.

MIght be a problem for many of us........ how would you register a "pragmatic" homeopath who has spent some time learning multiple techniques in different colleges and uses any of them as it seems indicated for the patient actually treated?

Why not just list them all (or a representative sampling)? If I were
looking for a homeopath, I would *love* to have all this information laid
out! I would also love to know if the practitioner uses other methods as
well.

Then, of course, one has the problem of deciding whether s/he is "jack of
many trades, master of none", or "an awesomely versatile and talented
person" -- having encountered some of each, I'm willing to believe either,
but how would we get a rating on that...

There are multiple ways of "doing" homeopathy-- Burnett wrote a great
piece about it. Organ support remedies (i.e., drainage) falls into
Burnett's model. Alternation falls into the Hahnemann model-- if done
with THOUGHT and not as ROUTINE. "Layer" prescribing is another one--
working on the fundamental layer and then giving a nosode on weekends
like many French prescribers do.
It's all homeopathy.
The other pragmatic edge is the use of NON-homeopathic therapies--
Aroma therapy, Bach flower (or other flower essences), Aura-soma
practice, homeobotanicals, reflexology, osteopathic manipulation,
chiropractic manipulation, herbal supplements, etc. None of these are
are homeopathy, but all are possibly useful.
It is simply important to know the difference between them and
homeopathy and to tell the client that THIS (pick one of them) might
be of help but is NOT homeopathy.
This keeps the focus of both the practitioner and the client clear so
should the client go to another practitioner they don't say, "Oh, but
my last homeopath massaged my feet" and need to have an explanation
which might be confusing IF the client thought that reflexology was a
part of homeopathy.
