The explanation that works best for me is from Morrison's Desktop
Companion (not the Desktop Guide) under Fever. He explains that fevers
were once analysed carefully into phases and types, and that many of our
rubrics refer to these categorisations. In general, fevers were expected
to progress through three phases - chill, heat and perspiration. If the
heat phase was absent or minimal this would be regarded as
characteristic and repertorised as "Fever, heat absent".

The three remedies in the sub-rubric "thirst, with" were all added by
Boericke. In his Repertory the rubric appears under Fever Type: Absent,
suggesting this is a category of fever. Looking in his MM for Cimex
gives "Thirst during apyrexia, but little during chilly stage; still
less during hot stage, and none during sweating".

But what does "fever, heat absent" *mean*?
Does it mean that the pt is objectively seen to have a fever, but
subjectively doesn't feel especially warm, or ?? And is this the same as
apyrexia, or does that mean a period when the fever has remitted, or ??

Heat of the body is intense yet she has no rise of temperature. Fluoric acid; kali iodatum

Feverish heat and redness of cheeks. (j.h.c.) Mercurius vivus/solubilis. Here feverishness and not fever.
