what is to be cured in disease (was: a bland case?)

Dear Joy,
Since both you and your patient are happy with your Rx there
is nothing further to discuss. But if you intend to discuss it in a general
way we can continue.
As ilustrative of "case taking", it is simply excellent.
But if you also intend it as illustrative of working out a smm, I must
say it is flawed for the following reason.
The disease manifested as pathology is an expression of the disturbance
in the vital force. This disturbance is expressed in the totality of the
symptom
picture in front of us. It is not for us to take some and reject the rest of
the
symptoms in as much as the same vital force is causing these rest of the
symptoms too. We have that liberty only in the following circumstances.
1. when you find two dissimilar diseases existing at the same time,
2.when the disease for which your pt consults is an acute condition and
some of her chronic state also persist in the acute state.
3.when you intend to do palliation and not cure for whatever reason.
Then the question comes; is it practically possible to include all the
symptoms.
For this only our masters gave guidelines regarding the relative value of
symptoms. Of vital importance are the symptoms of the Psyco-neuro-
endocrino- immunological axis as Sankaran calls it.
Thus if a pt says that wine < her condition it is a general symptom
and not a particular. So also the nervous /fidgetiness of feet
which being a concomitant in an area totally unrelated to
the pathology, is highly characteristic like what a
modalty is to a symptom. It is not as if a portion of the vital force is
producing the pathology and another portion of it is causing the
rest of symptoms to appear. It is the one and the same
unifying principle animating the whole of the organism that is
calling aloud and this is where treatment by parts of the allopaths
differs from our approach. While we may err in assessing the
mental condition as depressive etc., we have no such possibilities in
noting the objective signs and symptoms. Boger says;
"Objective phenomena, being exempt from self-interpretation and allowing the
largest scope to the acumen of the examiner are withal the least deceptive
and should receive our first and best attention. They teach lessons not to
be learned elsewhere, and by their great utility have contributed much to
the brilliant success of Homoeopathy."
But then, what are we to do when the pt himself/herself wants us to treat
only the pathology and nothing but the pathology. Thanks to our Master
Hahneman, probably he foresaw into the future and knew that at one time or
other all the homeopaths come to face this dilema and so included the
answer in the very 1st Aph and not buried it deep inside the organon:
"The physician's high and only mission is to restore the sick to health, to
cure, as it is termed.(1)
(1) His mission is not, however, to construct so-called systems, by
interweaving empty speculations and hypotheses concerning the internal
essential nature of the vital processes and the mode in which diseases
originate in the invisible interior of the organism (whereon so many
physicians have hitherto ambitiously wasted their talents and their time);
nor is it to attempt to give countless explanations regarding the phenomena
in diseases and their proximate cause (which must ever remain concealed),
wrapped in unintelligible words and an inflated abstract mode of expression,
which should sound very learned in order to astonish the ignorant - whilst
sick humanity sighs in vain for aid. Of such learned reveries (to which the
name of theoretic medicine is given, and for which special professorships
are instituted) we have had quite enough, and it is now high time that all
who call themselves physicians should at length cease to deceive suffering
man kind with mere talk, and begin now, instead, for once to act, that is,
really to help and to cure."
It is not as if I have not transgresed these principles. I am myself a
culprit
who did it many a time and there is no guarantee that I won't do in
future depending on the exigencies. But in the interest of our healing art,
let us not propagate such shortcut methods which are detrimental to
our patients and our noble profession.
sorry for my ranting...
Thanks again for your case.
