Phatak:
KALI ARSENICUM
GENERALITIES: It is a valuable remedy for inveterate skin diseases and when
patient's condition tend tD@ wards malignancy. All the sufferings are by loud belching.-From pit of stomach to spine an
anxious feeling accompanied by palpitation, not perceptible
objectively.-Empty feeling in stomach.-Sin king at epigastrium with
faintness.
12. Abdomen.-Burning pain in bowels; unquenchable thirst; belly tense and
painful; involuntary watery stools with sense as if a red-hot iron were in
anus.-Frequent griping pains in bowels, and almost constant desire for
stool; considerable tenderness in whole abdomen, which is distended.
13. Stool and Anus.-Violent diarrhœa.-Stools white, watery,
frothy.-Sensation as of a red-hot iron in anus.
14. Urinary Organs.-Urine scanty with pellicle.
16. Female Sexual Organs.-Cauliflower excrescence of os uteri, with flying
pains, pressure below os pubis, and stinking discharge.-Menses absent.-Milk
entirely arrested (afterwards restored by treatment).
17. Respiratory Organs.-Some gastric cough, and frequent raking of throat
and fauces of a muco-purulent secretion mixed with specks of blood.-Complete
aphonia, following skin affection.
19. Pulse.-Pulse weak and contracted.-Pulse small, scarcely perceptible,
rapid.
20. Back.-Much pain and tenderness down spine.
21. Limbs.-Palms and soles spreckled over with corns.
22. Upper Limbs.-Aching pain in r. shoulder and elbow, followed by herpetic
eruption.
23. Lower Limbs.-Knees bent up so he could not move his feet.-Varicose veins
of legs.-Crampy feeling of lower extremities, with partial loss of motion
and sensation, livid in places, tending to slough.
24. Generalities.-Such weakness she cannot sit up in bed; a loud noise or
sudden, unexpected motion throws her whole body into a
tremor.-Emaciation.-Tremor.-Faintness.-Phagedenic ulcers, deep base and
turned-up edges.-Rheumatic, gouty, and syphilitic pains.-Gouty nodosities.
25. Skin.-Dry, wilted skin; emaciated to a skeleton.-On three different
occasions, swelling of face and eyelids, then erysipelas invading whole face
ending in desquamation in a week.-Acne, appearance like that in early stage
of variola.-Miliary eruption.-Herpes zoster behind r. ear, r. side of neck,
r. shoulder, r. upper arm, r. chest, a few isolated vesicles l. side of
neck.-Severe attack of shingles r. side of chest.-Eruption covering entire
body except scalp, comes out in red papulæ, varying in diameter from size of
pin's head to that of a three cent. piece; vesicles form on summit,
suppurate, crusts form and fall off, leaving a sore which heals; the places
occupied by these sores are marked by a dark-coloured cicatrix, and the skin
generally has a dusky look; intolerable itching, stinging, and burning, esp.
on undressing at night; it is < on trunk, leg., and forearms; mind much
depressed.-Lichen confluens over whole body except face, palms, and soles,
and part of chest; the rest studded with papulæ, particularly distinct about
outer sides of thighs, arms, and back; they are covered with very minute,
flimsy, whitish scabs, causing a powdery appearance of skin; head very
scurfy; hair crisp and dry; often irritation in skin, which becomes reddened
and cracked, particularly about bend of arms and knees.-One of the earlier
signs is a minute papular rash, which by and by assumes the form of
delicate, brownish scales giving the skin an unwashed appearance; esp.
observed on parts protected from light by clothing.-After taking it for
three weeks, suddenly, after feeling ill for a few hours, a copious rash
made its appearance on face, hands, and chest, like measles; accompanied by
catarrhal symptoms swelling of face, lips, eyelids, yellow-furred tongue,
gastro-intestinal irritation, intense lameness of feet, standing giving
great pain; complete aphonia followed in a few days, desquamation commenced
in tenth day; redness lasted some weeks.-Epithelial cancer supervened after
prolonged medication with Kali ars. for psoriasis.-A clerk had taken arsenic
for a long time for psoriasis, palms and soles became spreckled over with
corns, finally epithelial cancer of scrotum appeared (Hutchinson).-Dry
chronic eczema; skin of arms thicker and rougher than natural, covered with
flimsy exfoliations of epidermis; very irritable, itching and tingling when
she gets warm; intensely fissured about bends of elbows and wrists;
occasional exacerbation, with eruption of distinct vesicles; languor and
lassitude; pale, sallow complexion; catamenia irregular.-Patches of
psoriasis on back, arms, and spreading from elbows, and anteriorly on legs,
size of a crown piece, and indolent.-Psoriasis: scaly itchings, causing him
to scratch till an ichorous fluid discharges, forming a hard
cake.-Discolouration of skin after psoriasis and lepra.-Psoriasis in
numerous patches, with great itching; the patches becoming more active,
scale off, and are replaced by smaller they leave behind them a red
skin.-Jaundice.
27. Fever.-Temperature of surface diminished.-Skin cool, dry.-Increase of
heat and dryness of skin.-Temperature, which before had been normal rose to
101, with malaise and anorexia.

day for scaly eruption on arms and legs; 3, Cattell, additional effects from

MIND. ? Dementia, [3].
EYE. ? Inflammation of tarsi, [3]. ? The eyes are suffused with tears, [2].
? Conjunctiva injected; or glassy, [1]. ? The conjunctiva is slightly
inflamed, [2]. ? Conjunctivitis, [3]. ? Sight dim, [3].
THROAT. ? Constriction of the throat, [3]. ? Submaxillary glands swollen and
tender, [3].
STOMACH. [10.] ? Nausea, vomiting, and purging; the vomiting was repeated
more than two hundred times (after a quarter of an hour), [1]. ? Vomiting,

took it for chronic psoriasis, which was relieved for a time, but returned
in an aggravated form; she then took it three times a day for a month,
beginning with doses of 5 drops, and gradually increasing to 15; 5, Dr.
James Begbie, Edinb. Med. Journ., vol. iii, 1858, p. 961, effects in eight
or ten days of moderate doses, say 5 drops, largely diluted, two or three
times daily; 6, Dr. John Elliotson, Med. Times and Gaz., 1858, New Ser., 16,
p. 524, a lady took 2 minims three times a day for rheumatism; 7, Dr. Thomas
Skinner, Brit. Med. Journ., 1858, p. 778, a woman nursing her first child,
took two doses of 30 drops for eczema of scalp and face; 8, Dr. Arthur
Leared, Med. Times and Gaz., 1863 (1), 63, effects in two cases of phthisis;
9, Dr. Robert McNab, ibid., p. 297, a woman, æt. twenty-eight years, took 3
minims three times a day for lupus of face; 10, Dr. Duffin, Lancet, 1869
(2), p. 508, a woman, with chronic psoriasis, took 3 minims three times a
day from September 3d to 19th.
MIND. ? Nervous depression, [5]. ? Great nervousness (after five days), [6].
EYE. ? Redness of eyes (after five days), [6]. [40.] ? Sense of heat and
itchiness of eyelids, to which succeed swelling and tenderness; the
conjunctiva becomes inflamed, the eye sensitive to light, and the orbit
surrounded by a dark discoloration, [5]. ? Itching of conjunctiva, [10].
FACE. ? Face pale (after five days), [6].
MOUTH. ? Gums swollen and tender, [5]. ? Tongue clean and red, like raw
beef, [4]. ? Whitish tongue, [10]. ? The tongue is coated with a white
silvery film, like that produced by touching its surface with a weak
solution of lunar caustic, [5]. ? It the remedy is persisted in salivation
ensues, [5].
THROAT. ? Throat dry and sore, [5]. ? Sense of constriction of throat, and
copious flow of saliva, [4].

subject to obstinate diarrhœa, and has now the following symptoms: frequent
griping pains in bowels, with almost constant desire for stool; considerable
tenderness over whole abdomen, which is distended, [4].
URINARY ORGANS. [60.] ? Marked increase of the quantity of urine occurs, not
infrequently with a free deposit of lithates, [5]. ? Urine scanty,
high-colored, and passed with effort, [4].
SEXUAL ORGANS. ? Menses absent, [4].
RESPIRATORY APPARATUS. ? Some gastric cough, and frequent raking of throat
and fauces, of a muco-purulent secretion, mixed with specks of blood, [4].
CHEST. ? It stopped the milk entirely, but it was afterwards restored by
treatment, [7].
PULSE. ? Acceleration of pulse, [5]. ? Pulse 100, small and feeble, [4].
BACK. ? Much pain and tenderness down spine, [4].
EXTREMITIES. ? Aching pain in right shoulder and elbow, which on the
following day was associated with a copious and well-marked eruption of
herpetic vesicles over the integuments of arm and forearm, [10]. ? Crampy
feeling of lower extremities, with partial loss of motion and sensation;
they are much swollen, livid in places, and showing a tendency to slough,

GENERALITIES. [70.] ? Great emaciation, [4]. ? Tremor, [5]. ? Frequent
muscular tremors, [4]. ? Strength lost (fifth day), [6]. ? Faintness, [5].
SKIN. ? One of the earlier signs is a minute papular rash, which by-and-by
assumes the form of delicate brownish scales, giving the skin an unwashed
appearance; this has been most observed over those parts of the skin which
are protected from light by clothing, [5]. ? After taking it for three
weeks, suddenly, after feeling ill for a few hours, a copious rash made its
appearance on face, hands, and chest, resembling that of measles, the maculæ
being slightly elevated, with intervening space of skin little affected, and
showing papules in some places, vesicles in others. It was accompanied by
general catarrhal symptoms, swelling of face, lips, and eyelids, burning
heat of skin, yellow-furred tongue, gastro-intestinal irritation, and
intense tenderness of feet, so much so that standing gave great pain. These
symptoms were followed in a few days by complete aphonia. Desquamation
commenced about the tenth day of this eruption, but the redness of the skin
did not entirely disappear for some weeks, [9].
