Any views as to why the Phosphorous patient has delusions that 'he
is on a distant island' & that he 'is a criminal'?

Phosphorous has, at the centre of its sphere DIFFUSION - hard to pin down,
hard to grasp etc.

Many write ups of this remedy talk about how friendly, sympathetic and
lovely Phosphorous people are. These are, of course, healthy aspects and we
wouldn't be prescribing on these, we should be looking at the diseased state
of this remedy. But it is true, no matter how ill a Phos. person is they are
still so friendly and warm towards the world and this is nearly always
evident during the case taking.

I see 4 main areas of PHOSPHOROUS:-

DIFFUSION - HAEMORRHAGE - FEARS - CANCER

1) Diffusion:-

Bearing in mind what Phosphorous is (to bring light) - there is luminosity,
light, effervescence (used in the manufacture of matches!! - strike a light
- here one second and gone the next) and because of this there is a great
feeling of transience. They are all over the place, never finish anything,
can't hold onto information (learn poorly).

There is magnetism, they capture your imagination, the eyes sparkle, easily
excited, very sympathetic and sensitive to others. Very expansive in their
responses to others, they virtually never complain or criticise. They are
openly affectionate - they need to give this out so they are desperate for
company to do this - cannot be alone for long. The diffusion spreads them
far and wide and they often need to be brought back together, to be
grounded, and this is one aspect of the 'delusion of being on a distant
island' - they are alone and desperately need company and communication,
which is rather difficult on a distant island.

They are often clairvoyent, see auras, anticipate events - so sensitive to
everything that it can become a burden to be like this. Sensitive to sound,
smells, changes in temperatures, pain, light and dark, etc.

So their own self is of prime importance, always directing attention to
themselves, there can be a love of self, egocentric and others cannot
compete - they might have many partners during life (can't hold on to
people). Also exhibitionist, will act out and mimic. Children can tell
dreadful fibs with great convincing, innocence and charm of course. A strong
sexual appetite comes under this force.

2) Haemorrhage:-

The theme of diffusion continues with the haemorrhage - they can bleed
easily, profuse and from anywhere. The blood is overflowing like the
personality. Bloody diarrhoea, haemorrhoids, heavy menses (menorrhagia),
nose bleeds, haemoptysis (lungs), haematuria (urine), extravasation of blood
under the skin, gums bleed easily etc. They flush up easily. Red blood and
even red haired and if not red haired the hair will have some tint of red
somewhere.

3) Fears:-

So many fears many stemming from their intense sensitivity.

Fear of being rejected or criticised, cannot be happy if others around them
are not so (delusion of being noble - self importance).

Fear of anything even slightly unpleasant - effects them immensely, even
pleasurable activities can make them fearful of the emotions spent.

They fear their own sensitivity.

Fear of ghosts, spirits, the dark - think they see things, twilight
(hovering between light and dark)

Fear of noises, thunderstorms and not surprisingly fireworks

Fear of illness, being poisoned, the future, death, that something will
happen, of robbers.

Fear of being alone, of failure.

If you look at all the fears of Phos in general and remember how lively
their imagination is, they really get carried away with these fears - you
can then align ailments from grief and disappointment and thus the lively
imagination of Phos will convince themselves that they are to blame for
whatever happens to them - hence you have a guilty conscience and delusion
they are a criminal. If this self reproach and self blaming is very strong
you will see why Phos can be such an important cancer remedy.

4) Cancer:-

Phosphorous is a big cancer remedy. It is an exceedingly poisonous substance
but an essential element in the body structure. The vapour is absorbed by
the lungs and there is an affinity to lungs, bones and nerve tissue. But
almost any organ can be susceptible and especially - liver, skin, lungs,
bowels, stomach, blood. Kent lists the following type of cancers -
encephaloma, epithelioma, fungus haemotodes, scirrhus.

I would recommend reading "An introduction to the principles and practice of
homeopathy" by Charles E. Wheeler who gives a good write up of this remedy
from a pathology point of view.

Other pathology = strong tubercular influence so the whole respiratory
system can be involved - bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, coughs of all sorts.

Phosphorous clients will often present with stomach and/or digestive
complaints.

The energy aspect of this remedy is vital - always tired, need cat naps.

The bones are also nearly always effected - people working with Phosphorous
used to get "phossy jaw" - necrosis of bones.

Nearly always cold but crave cold drinks and many pains are of a burning
nature. All other modalities are easily read up on in the MM's.

Once you've had someone who you prescribe Phosphorous to you will never
forget the remedy picture, whether it is a child or an adult.

Dear Joy,
Thank you so much for the e-mail. I am studying Homeopathy through correspondence & live in Zimbabwe. Hence I don't have access to any literature except my text books. Would you suggest any text books which would explain remedies in such a manner? I would be extremely grateful.
Regards, Smeeta.

Dear Smeeta, I would prefer this to be an open question to all the group as
there are so many wonderful books to suggest.

Much of what I write comes from my own personal experience in practice and
backed up by years of studying as many materia medicas as possible. It is
also very important to get as much clinical experience as possible and it is
this which brings the remedies to life, so to speak. The first materia
medicas I read were Phatak and Boericke, then Tyler, Blackie,
Wright-Hubbarb, Vithoulkas, Hahnemann, Kent, Sankaran, Coulter, Murphy,
Scholten, plus many many more. A great deal is available online now as well.
You just have to keep on reading as big a variety as possible.

I am sure others will make suggestions as well. An online visit to the
homeopathic book sellers will also give you some ideas.

I am at present building my own website which will be concentrating on
materia medica and remedy write ups 'in this manner' as you say. So I will
let you know when it is up and running.

best wishes and good luck, Joy

Hi Joy,

Phos is a remedy I've read up on (and experienced) a *great* deal, and I'd
like to add a bit:

You've given us a lovely write-up of the earlier stage of phos, but I think
it's also important to give attention to e.g. the depleted stage, where the
presentation may be actually *opposite* the friendly, bubbly picture that
phos is famous for!

I like this write-up in Roger Morrison's MM. In his first paragraph, he
basically says what you have said, about the "diffusion", sparkliness, etc.
Then he continues:
"There are prices to be paid for these poor boundaries. In the first
stages of pathology in Phosphorous, we find great anxiety. Any idea may
enter his mind and be a cause for anxiety. However, he is also easily
reassured. Generally the anxiety takes the form of concern about health. But
as the pathology worsens the patient has more and more "free-floating
anxiety" and the fear that something bad will happen. The patient has many
fears, especially of things which are symbolic of his lack of boundaries
such as darkness, deep water, death, etc. These fears may develop into a
debilitating phobic state. Especially, these fears come when the patient is
alone, and are better in company.
"In later stages the patient is so sensitive to others and to outside
stimulation that the well-known desire for company is lost. The patient
prefers to be alone and is intolerant of strangers or of hearing of other's
problems. As more and more of the inner vitality is lost, so also is lost
the "bubbly" and sparkling nature. Eventually the patient becomes slow and
indifferent and apathetic, much like Phosphoric acid or Sepia."
(snipped the rest)

In good ol' Boericke, one would barely even recognize Phos -- he says
nothing about friendliness or any of that, but gives the long list of
physical pathology, and about mind, says only this:

Mind.
Great lowness of spirits. Easily vexed. Fearfulness, as if something
were creeping out of every corner. Clairvoyant state. Great tendency to
start. Over-sensitive to external impressions. Loss of memory. Paralysis
of the insane. Ecstasy. Dread of death when alone. Brain feels tired.
Insanity, with an exaggerated idea of one's own importance. Excitable,
produces heat all over. Restless, fidgety. HYPO-sensitive, indifferent.

Dear Shannon, thanks for your valuable contribution. I agree, I think it is
vital that we learn the likely 'stages' of pathology within each remedy and
how they might present. Some cases take a great deal of sifting through MM's
to clutch at what might be just a tiny portion of the whole symptom picture
and this is why we must compare remedy presentations in a number of MM's.

Thanks, Joy

Hi Smeeta,

What books are you using so far?
Also, do you have some of the website addresses for on-line materia medica
and etc.? Let us know what you have already, and we'll suggest more.

Best,
Shannon

Dear Shannon,
Thanks for the response. At the moment I am using Tyler, Kent,Vithoulkas,Vermeulen(MM), Phatak (MM), Boericke(MM), Clarke(MM), & sometimes Sankaran (spirit of homeopathy). Joy's remedy picture for Phosphorous was so good, I instantly understood what Phosphorous is all about. Please suggest other books & also websites.
Rgds, Smeeta.
