Dog, more information

Post by Jean Doherty »

little Benj is a Shih Zu. Hard to tell if he's a wanderer {I always think
of Tuberculin in immune system disorders][ Jean] as he's never had the
chance. However he is a cheeky cheerful little rascal and loves to pop off,
pretending, when called, to be totally deaf! Basically an indoors breed and
very sweet natured except with larger male dogs (the larger the better). In
the early critical stages of the Immune Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia he
became extremely weak - due, I understand, to the very low red blood count
and the toxins released into the blood stream by destruction of the red
blood cells. The disease also affected production of red blood cells at the
bone marrow level, it was a particularly bad version. Currently being
treated with cortisone and a medication called Imuran, an immunosuppressant.
Not yet clear whether the current dosage is sufficient to keep the anaemia
at bay, which is why, I think, it's particularly interesting to try
additional therapies. He also had, at one stage (this has been going on for
some weeks now), a severe reaction to the high cortisone doses, involving
vomiting and diarrhoea. At the moment that is OK but might not be if the
cortisone had to be re-increased. Jean with thanks
