I have a patient - a sixteen year old boy who has done well on Nat Mur. The only problem is that whenever I repeat it he gets mouth ulcers. Granted that this is an old symptom in him and it is in the remedy but surely they shouldn't keep reappearing. Comments would be appreciated whether you think I have the wrong remedy or wrong potency. I only repeat it when he has headaches that return and have always given him a 1M - single dose. In the last year he has had 3 single doses. His eczema clears up completely as well. Mum says his moods are a lot better and mentally and physically he has gown. His presenting complaint was hay fever last year and this year it is only just appearing now, a lot later than last year and it is a lot milder. It is being controlled very well on Grass 200 - one or 2 doses a week and Euphrasia eye drops as needed.

Hi Rochelle,

To me this sounds like the type of response Hahnemann describes (can't
remember what aphorisms!) for a remedy that is "close enough" to do the
needed work, yet not quite "close enough" to do it without causing any
"accessory symptoms". He says that if the accessory symptoms are mild and
pass away soon on their own, and healing ensues, that it's okay, the remedy
is being serviceable.

Another possibility might be "too large a dose"??? Have you tried giving
him water dose and see whether that works better?

To me, tho (uh-oh, beating that "how long should a dose last" drum again!),
the fact that he (young, and presumably not too drastically weak or ill) has
needed three doses of 1M in a year, would *strongly* suggest that the remedy
is not quite the best fit, and that you will very likely have to find a
closer fit in the future. (Unless the trouble is healed before his VF stops
responding to the remedy, in which case you're home!)

So I guess what I'd do is, keep using the nat-m so long as it is working
well, but be thinking about where you *might* look next, if it turns out to
be needed... (Or maybe look for "Plan B" now, while you still have "Plan A"
(nat-m) to buy more time with if needed?)

Alternatively one could take the view that you have a situation of the
indicated remedy not working, which isn't too dissimilar to the above. So I
would retake the case of the headache and try another remedy.

Hi Joy and Shannon,

Thanks for both your posts. I did actually give him some Bryonia 30 to try next time he gets a headache!! I don't anticipate him returning to me for some time except for repeats of the Grass 200 if he runs out. I reckon I have a near remedy. Someone suggested privately about looking at Winchelsea which I will do.

Dear Rochelle,

Pardon me for coming in rather late on this. But in such a chronic case,
would it not be better to go deeper than merely prescribing on the outermost
symptomatology? I have personally never found that superficially working
with potentised allergens took a case very far: slight palliation at best,
generally nothing you would call a proper result. Perhaps retaking the case
and starting out with some drainage would be beneficial?

To me the Nat Mur was going deeplyas I gave it as a constitutional
remedy. The Grass in potency I used as he knew that this was the
allegen and it has worked. Since last year the hayfever this year
started much later which showed to me that I was on the right track.
What drainage would you suggest?

That depends on the case, and the individual person. I would refer you to a
very good little book by Dr E.A. Maury, titled "Drainage in Homeopathy", in
which drainage methods related to constitutional type are discussed among
many other aspects of drainage.

Hi George,

I've got that book but haven't opened it for a while. I may well do so. I thought drainage was to do with an organ and I wouldn't know which organ to target really.
