1. A god friend of mine says that his daughter age 13 has been diagnosed with Coeliacs disease. I have directed him to a homeopath in his part of the world but wonder if anyone has managed to cure this?

2, I have got 1 year old coming in who only weighs 15lbs - was 6lbs at birth. Apparently all she wants is breast and Mum can't even get her to drink water or anything else which means that she gets dehydrated. Apparently she has had 4 lots of antibiotics in her life and keeps getting infections. Naturally I will find out about the pregnancy , birth etc but any thoughts on what I should be looking for when she comes will be appreciated. I'm thinking - clingy, no thirst, Pulsatilla but maybe I should be looking at Gaertner. They are off to USA next week and I suggested avocado and seeing if she will eat alfalfa sprouts to encourage an appetite.

Rochelle

Hi Rochelle,

Without any certainty, I'd wonder whether at one year, it shouldn't be
alright for her to get as much nursing as she likes? Will she take breast
milk for a bottle or cup, if access has been a problem, or is that not the
issue?

I would have misgivings about alfalfa sprouts, as I don't think a
one-year-old would chew them well enough to benefit, and also would worry
about whether sprouts could carry germs that could be a problem for one so
young??

Re celiac, I remember my former (retired) homeopath talking about curing a
case of celiac disease in rather short order, by a straightforward
constitutional approach. (I don't have any details beyond that, tho.)

Hope you'll tell us more details of the little one, when you have them!

Dear Rochelle,

the rubrics - appetite lost with thirst (as she is only taking liquids) -
also, eats little and drinks a lot - would be good starting points, plus you
will need to deal with the history of antibiotics - already beginning to
sound like a number of remedies. But I don't quite understand pre-empting a
case before you see it. Bowel nosode might well be appropriate but if they
are going away I would be cautious of prescribing if they have no access to
follow up homeopathic care.

Best wishes, Joy

Dear Joy ,
I am not really pre-empting the case just trying to get some thoughts. Don't worry I am not seeing the child until she is back from USA and I am back from Israel. I wouldn't prescribe if I wasn't around for support if necessary. So saying I have got a new case in the day before I go but they do have Email and so will I for most of my stay. Mum says she is getting dehydrated because she is not getting enough liquid because she won't drink other than from the breast if offered a cup or bottle. However this child has been known to pinch another child's cup or bottle and drink from it and that is what frustrates mum. We may have a precocious child here but I won't know until I see her. I always reckon that babies take what they need but this child is well underweight for her age considering her birth weight. Thanks for your thoughts as always.
Regards,
Rochelle

Dear Rochelle Marsden,

as a mother I would spontaneously suggest banana, mashed - maybe with a
bit of water. Mostly breast fed babies miss the sweetness of mother's
milk in other food. Thus, bananas with their natural sweetess are the
best way to introduce solid food to them, cooked unsalted carrots (maybe
with a little bit of honey) might be tried as well, mashed apples left
to gorw brown at the air are the next, as soon as the babies can take
the sour taste.
Normally breast feeding supplies enough fluid to avoid dehydration in
the first year of life. Maybe the mother should weigh the baby before
and after brest feeding to check how much the baby drinks. It may be
that the little one is to feeble to suck properly and because of that
milk production is not stimulated enough. If that be the case, pumping
is the alternative, (electric pumps are the better ones for they
stimulate the milk production to a greater degree. The pumped milk can
be fed with the bottle using a bottle nipple with a big hole. This can
be done until the baby has gained strength and milk production ahs
increased.

BTW, it is quite of to nurish a baby at the age of one year by breast
feeding only, although it may sound very unusual to you. For
underweight, premature born babies it is perfectly OK. So no stress.

Best wishes
Claudia

Hi Claudia
Firstly thanks for your post. Yes Mum has tried banana and she used to eat it but now has gone off that. I also suggested avocado. I think Mum really thinks that the child is being awkward but again I won't know until I see the child. The other thing that I told Mum was my second child weighed the same as a 6 month old when she was 1 year old and also would not eat and then didn't want to drink. She was diagnosed as having congenitally large adenoids and had them removed when she was 13 months old. After that she did start eating and drinking. She actually stayed very thin until puberty and is now a large boned 5 foot 7, 11.5 stone 28 year old!!
This baby won't drink from a bottle or cup when offered but will pinch another child's sometimes which really annoys Mum!! Maybe it is Mum who needs the treatment but that is not for me to suggest!

Hi Rochelle,

My first h'th came to us as a "pediatrician" for my eldest. He did indeed
suggest that getting treated myself might be helpful -- and boy was it ever!
I think it would be *quite* okay for you to suggest that she consider it.
Tho it might be well to wait until she sees some good results with her
child, to help motivate her.

Some homeopaths will not treat a young child *unless* they are also treating
a parent, because they feel that without that, they are not getting a full
case (understanding of home situation and parents' medical history can be
important in understanding a baby's case!), and also don't have the best
chance of good case management and follow-up for the child.

Looking up rubrics for this baby with the reflux :-

1) I find 1 remedy , Lycopodium for "cries all day , sleeps all night " in Allen's keynotes and other MM however in Murphy's Lotus the opposite is found

2) Looking up opisthotonos (arching in the back) Dioscora is not in any rep. I take it this is not the same as bending backwards but possibly to do with convulsions. I could only find the rubric "bending backwards amel " in Phatak and take it that also refers to bending anything backward like the head!!

Dear Vera,

He is not in a tearful mood, in fact the opposite except when he is in pain!! It is interesting that Psor also has the opposite. Med normally stays up in the light at night as they don't like the dark . Not sure how relevant that is to the conversation!!! :-)
