2 day old baby

Any suggestions please.
2 day old baby who shot out very fast 2 weeks early but seems none the worse for it has a lot of cream coloured thick pus coming out of one eye. There is a suggestion that the tear duct may not be open yet. All I could think of was making up a Euphrasia tincture 1 drop in 10ml boiled water to be dropped on the eye a few ties a day. The breast fed baby seems quite settled but is having a lot of difficulty bringing up wind which causes the typical Coloc knees to chest reaction. Have given Mum Coloc in case baby gets very distressed about it but to otherwise leave it. The baby weighed 8 lbs and doesn;t even look new born to me!!

Any suggestions for the eye other than what I have given. I don;t want to start giving this content calm baby as yet. However the 2 older brothers with colds were all over it and so far the cat is ignoring it!!!! Mum ( Nux Vom) and sons (Lyco and Carc) are patients.

Breast milk placed directly in the eyes (each time the child nurses) is
usually all it takes to help clear out the duct naturally and without
complicating a self limiting occurrence.

Dear Rochelle

I had good experience with puls., arg-nit., sil. and hep. There is no need
to use them as eye-drop. The patient or his/her mother can take it orally.
Tell us more about the case. Tell us more about the pus. Does it come from
inner canti or it sticks lids together. Is his/her affected eye red or not?
What about the other eye. Does he/she have lachrymation or not?

Regards

Farbod

Thanks for your reply. The baby's eyes are not really opening much being a couple of weeks prem. All I saw was the baby blink and this thick cream coloured discharge come out of the eye. The amount was from exuded from corner to corner in a large lump!! I've no idea about state of the eyes other than that. The baby will be coming on Monday as one of the brothers has a consultation. I don't think babies of that age have any lachrymation. This usually comes later.

I liked the idea of mother's milk that was sent and will pass this on today.

Hello to all the listees,

to use boiled water for eye drops is not very advisable, for water
irritates the eye and may hamper the healing. Best to use is
physiological saline, that means water containing 0.9 % NaCl. If you
haven't got it at hand you easily can make it: it's 2 level teaspoons of
pure! (without additives!) salt per 1 liter of water. The trouble
however is that you should take meticulous care to prepare it sterile.

I made good experience in cases of newborns with eyedrops containing
Vervain (a Bach remedy) 1 drop per 10 ml of physiological saline.

All the best
Claudia
