Is it considered okay to take a portion of a person's words from one list,
and post them out-of-context on other lists?

i would think that it is as legitimate as quoting from a book or journal when
writing a paper. i think it is the issue of ethics that comes into question when
words are taken out of context and distort the original meaning in order to
make some point.

these lists are public, not private conversations. they are open to all people
who are interested in participating--no different than any public dialogue

In a book, if you quote someone, you first obtain permission, right?

Posting to another list when that person is not on the list, takes that
person out of the discussion and unable to reply, support or refute points
arising. They would be unaware of any development, - I would have a big
problem with that.

Then one has to question of motive for stuff being taken off the main lists
to the alchemelia one, especially in light of previous posts by
homeobond007.

no, you dont need permission to use material in a book if you are quoting from it.
you are required to give credit for the information quoted, though. and as i already
said, there are issues of ethics in presenting the material correctly. as to your concern
about giving the author response rights--well you can always contact them and bring
into the conversation. but i dont know if that is really required. i imagine that ideas a
are shared to further a dialogue. i would agree that if you are taking material in order
to trash another person, it would not be that ethical. but we refer to other people's ideas
all the time, agreeing or disagreeing with them and we dont contact them to give them
the opportunity to reply. once ideas are put out in public they are fair game for
discussion, both positive and negative

Yes, I can see the sense in that.
But what about when the quoter appears to be deliberately mis-representing
the quotee? And even saying this which are simply untrue, e.g. that David
Johnson has forsaken classical homeopathy? Which I'm betting he did not say
on HHBB, because everyone there would *know* it was nonsense.

And if that difference would be abundantly clear to anyone who read the
original deleted material, which the quoter had removed before the
(unauthorized) quoting? Implication being that the deception is perhaps
deliberate?

Whew, apparently Homeo Bond was asked to leave the other two lists--right
after the post that infuriated me, and I notice he hasn't posted here since
then, either. Maybe that's the end of this...

Sorry for all the wasted time, and my tedious goings on about it; if I'd
realized he was already gone, I would have stopped...
