Aph 43

In Response to Andrew's comments, what I have been taught and understand by
this aph is that if we introduce a similar, short term but stronger disease
(artificial diseases caused by a homoeopathic remedy is always stronger than
a natural disease) to the diseased body, this is sufficient to awaken the VF
as to what has gently crept upon it (taken it by stealth as it were) and the
VF is then able o shake the natural disease off. The artificial disease
being short term is soon done away with in any case.
Result is cure.

Hi Soroush,

Sounds nice, but only problem is, one would expect the same mechanism to be
at work whether the remedy is working on acute or chronic disease. In acute
disease there is no "creeping upon". Usually the disease may manifest with
very strong symptoms. Or think of this, a person gets sick, with mild
symptoms. Then they get more sick, symptoms increase, but this isn't making
the patient any better, except maybe in the case of a fever, but doesn't
hold for the majority of Sx of disease. For example, more pain and
inflammation does not heal an arthritic joint.

What Hahnemann says in a nutshell is that the vital force or principle
serves a higher purpose - determined by the indwelling, reason-gifted mind.
(in health = aph 9); for the purpose of giving us the capacity to fulfill
our higher mission).
ยง 9
In the healthy condition of man, the spiritual vital force (autocracy), the
dynamis that animates the material body (organism), rules with unbounded
sway, and retains all the parts of the organism in admirable, harmonious,
vital operation, as regards both sensations and functions, so that our
indwelling, reason-gifted mind can freely employ this living, healthy
instrument for the higher purpose of our existence.
In disease, the "inner disease state" mistunes the VF. i.e. it now
furnishes and is occupied with a set of processes that are determined by
this influence. I think of it this way - the vital force is necessary for
life. In health (aph 9) we have a "healthy life". In disease, the disease
state feeds off the vital force. The VF provides life to the dynamic
disturbance. The remedy acts as an artificial disturber of the VF. It too
needs the VF to manifest its dynamic disturbance. No VF, - no remedy Sx.
(You can't do a proving on a corpse !!).

The introduction of the remedy in the diseased patient results in a battle
for dominance of the VF between the Rx and the inner disease state. Much
like two magnets trying to attract the same metal object. If the VF is
under the influence of the Rx, then it stands to reason the inner disease
state suffers, although for the outside observer there is seemingly no
difference - the VF is still "mistuned". If the Rx is stronger than the
disease state, then the Sx seem to increase (aggravation). This is why the
Rx needs to be similar to the inner disiease state (as manifest by the signs
and Sx). If the Rx is dissimilar, then the parts of the inner disease state
not similar are not affected by a drop in VF sustenence and so once the
influence of the remedy is over (being a "stronger dissimilar disease"), the
dormant inner disease can manifest again. Hence aph 43 and preceeding
aphorisms.

So the remedy also provides a disease state, but the difference is

- it has a time frame of action, its like an acute disease
- the period of disturbance can be manipulated by repeat dosing.
- the depth of influence can be influenced by potency.
- its mechanism of action is to be a "disease to the disease state"

Its logical then that the remedy is affecting the disease state but also the
healthy state (aph 9). So unecessary repeat dosing does no good. (Proving
Sx are not signs of health - thats basic)

As soon as the effect of the remedy wears off, the VF can now serve either:

- the remnants of inner disease state (if the remedy was not stronger than
the disease) In this case another dose is needed at a higher potency.
(This is the case in LM posology)
or (and this is the goal of cure)
- the higher reasoning mind etc. (aph 9)

The purpose of the VF is to provide life whether to
- the indwelling spirit,
- the dynamic inner disease state or
- the remedy.

Thats why Hahnemann said we must respect the VF. Weaken the VF by remedy
action and you end up with cure, but a weakened state, even death.

For the homeopath, the purpose of the characteristic symptoms of the
disturbed VF are not to overcome the disease, although some Sx can be seen
to be opposing the disease state. The Sx are a marker to a remedy to
achieve an artificial, manipulated disease state.

Fight fire with fire !!

Once the disease state is overcome, the VF can now return to the state of
aph 9. In this case it can go about homeostasis, something which was not
possible while under the influence of the dynamic disturbance (inner disease
or remedy). It is this state of achieving homeostasis that is often confued
with a cure of the inner disturbance)

Remember that signs and symptoms are not all indications of VF reaction.
Some may be VF deficiency. Once the disease state is repelled, the VF can
now restore order, if it again comes under control of the indwelling, reason
gifted mind.

Paul
