examination

Although it was really hurtful to read much of what Dave wrote regarding my
write up of Asterias (one would have to have a rhino skin not to be touched
in some way), I also should say that much of me doesn't give a monkey's
backside what he says because I now no longer have any respect for him.
Being 'huffy' or taking things 'harshly' does not come into it - I felt
neither of these emotions - as the issue in question has nothing to do with
the writing on Asterias.
What I am concerned and angry about is the near slander regarding my point
of view about physical examinations. He managed to corrupt my words which
then spread like a virus to others and a myth developed along the lines that
I scorn physical examination. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I never laid any scorn on physical examination, neither did I say that I
never conduct them.
"Examination" is to qualify our knowledge, to enhance our 'vision' and
observation of the client. It is about seeing, hearing and knowing and
understanding what information is being offered to us from the client and if
that includes physical examination then so be it - as long as one knows what
one is doing. Qualification in this area is VERY important. Instruments can
hurt, hands are instruments and can also hurt. Worst of all you may be able
to see and feel and examine extensively but STILL make the wrong remedy and
potency choice. Homeopathy is only as good as the practitioner.
I know a lot about pathology, disease states and the course they typically
take, drug reaction, anatomy, I can recognise an emergency situation and
obviously attend to them if I have to. I consider all this knowledge to an
absolute necessity in my responsibilities as a Homeopath.
I rarely accept acutes any more as I cannot guarantee an 'on call' approach
- there are just not enough homeopaths in my area. So I now restrict these
to within a very short drive away and have to say 'no' to quite a lot of
people - they are referred elsewhere. Many of my cases are long drawn out
chronic cases that have been under allopathic care (!) with lots of drugs
and no cure until they finally find homeopathy. I see an enormous amount of
children with skin conditions, and a lot of people with mental and emotional
disharmonies, and a fair amount of really serious physical pathology - quite
a mixed bag, that is much of my current practise. If I need to 'see' a skin
eruption I will do so, if I need to 'feel' a lump I will do so, if necessary
I might take blood pressure but not if my client is able to tell me what it
is (can be notoriously unreliable anyway). I will look in a throat if the
client is unsure if an abscess exists, or unsure of the colour of their
tongue. I will look into an eardrum as well. Some clients have even brought
me urine and stool samples to look at! What I don't do is bombard a client
with unnecessary physical examination. How many Homeopaths take blood
samples and do path lab work - hardly any I would say. We do not always have
to do these things. What I certainly do not do is a physical examination to
help me decide on a remedy!!!
What I do, when taking the case, is to make sure I understand all I need to
about the client - to have the vision and the knowledge about what I am
doing, the case taking takes as long as it needs to, is highly detailed and
finished. There are rare occasions when I hardly say anything to the client
- the case assessment is based almost entirely on listening, which is
another way of 'knowing' what needs to be healed.
As an adjunct to this I am sure there are Homeopaths out there who are
physically not able to 'do' physical examinations themselves, perhaps they
are visually impaired or have difficulty moving their limbs, for example,
but they are wonderful homeopaths nonetheless, and know what they are doing.
A big thank you to all who sent support.
