Tamoxifen

I feel sure that there was a discussion on prescribing on Tamoxifen recently
but I have down a search of the archives and nothing showed so it must have
been my imagination!!

So - has anyone found any prescribing difficulties with someone on
Tamoxifen? I have a new patient who has had a double mastectomy +
reconstruction (with septicaemia!) + chemo and radiotherapy with a
presenting complaint of tiredness!!!! It was a through and through
Carcinosin case and that is what I prescribed but one dose!!!

Rochelle

Hi Rochelle

Last year I had a patient who had had mastectomy and fearful of leaving tamoxifen.

Her constitutional remedy in LM potency worked OK.

Good luck

Has anyone got patients on Tamoxifen and do you have any recommendations for the heat flushes that come when taking it. She has only been on it about 6 weeks so I don't know if this side effect will stop after a while.

Hi Rochelle,
My wife has been on this treatment for some months now and is also plagued by hot flushes, however, in the case of oestrogen positive breast tumours (for which Tamoxifen is prescribed) it is uncertain whether Red Clover or Wild Yam can be used safely. However, as homoeopathic remedies perhaps this can be used safely.
I should appreciate any help that is forthcoming.
So glad you raised this topic, thanks Rochelle.

My friend has been told not to use herbal medicines that is why I asked the question. I did have a patient a while back on Tamoxifen but hot flushes was not her problem.I treated her constitutionally and it seemed to work.

You can learn more about the herb drug interactions and tamoxifen at these sites

http://www.evitamins.com/healthnotes/he ... ID=1509008
A good book to own is
Mosby's Handbook of Drug-Herb and Drug-Supplement Interactions
http://www.harcourt-international.com/c ... 0323020143

This was on another website as well

Question: My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in August. We have completed chemo, and radiation treatment. Her prognosis in good. Her tumor was small, with estrogen positive receptors. There was micrometastasis in one node. We were considering adding Flax Seed into our diets, but have seen that there are some warning about Tamoxifen and flax seed. see: http://www.oncolink.upenn.edu/support/nutrition/faq/. A physician, friend has indicated that he does not understand that warning, and the benefits outweigh any potential harm. Your suggestion and help is most appreciated.

Response By: Interactions Team
Answer: Michael, on balance we would agree with your physician. The site you mention is unfortunately not very helpful. Firstly, fresh *whole* flax seed is a very weak phytoestrogen. There is no evidence that weak phytoestrogens are harmful following estrogen positive tumors. Epidemiological evidence suggests that phytoestrogens reduce breast cancer incidence. The precise mechanism of action of phytoestrogens at the estrogen receptor is not yet understood. Clinical experience suggests that in some circumstances herbal phytoestrogens block the receptor and prevent the symptoms of excessive estrogen activitation.

Secondly, flax oil (extracted from the seeds) is a rich source of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (PUFA) which are not phytoestrogens. There is some evidence that PUFA's are anti-neoplastic, and they are known to reduce the release of pro-inflammatory messenger molecules (cytokines) and increase the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Many practitioners with experience of nutritional therapeutics include both whole flax seed and PUFA's in protocols for breast cancer.

Interactions Team.
I have had success with helping women who were experiencing breast cancer and other cancers like lung and melanoma etc with constitutional care and some intercurrents. Fortunately they were not on chemo. Those on chemo I add chinese herbs intermittantly with homeopathics and acupuncture for the side effects.

Hope this helps,
Sunny

Hi:
Taking estrogen for few months will not create a lot of difference. It is not like Arsenic poison rather it is a chemical that messes your signals. If these signals are misled for a long time then body trains its pattern and overgrowth may (should) take place. Still if you are going by the law of similar then guess what symptoms it produces and how to tackle them. Wild yam or drosera and black cohosh etc. may be mechanically closer and easily make sense. However, the symptoms produced are just like symptoms produced by xenoestrogens. Phytoestrogens may be helpful as preventive but to cure a different course is required. Feel the breast. Is it firm or flabby. Firm breast is fibrous and you need a remedy that effects fibers. Flabby breasts are more fatty and you need a remedy that is more effective in fatty tissues. As a general remedy Petroleum is one to address some of the problems such as hot flashes (Lachesis or Caust may be useful too). Pulsatilla (that Dr. Ahmad Currim says does
not always has hot temperament) may be useful. By and large Petroleum has typical symptoms of dry skin, hot flashes, heart palitation etc. and is xenoestrogen too. Once I cured a very very long standing case of ulcer with petroleum alternating with another remedy. Potency is vital.
