Dear List Members,
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Marie Van Stokkum, I live in Palm Springs, Ca. I grew up in Indonesia, before the War (II) with my parents and my uncle, who was an MD, DDS and Homeopath. Homeopathy was part of our lives since birth, but I remained "suspicious" until about 15 years ago. My formal training as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist started in The Netherlands at the University of Groningen (Von Boenninghausen's alma mater), worked for 43 years in that chosen field, here in America. With retirement aproaching I wanted to have 'something' to pour my energies into and decided to study with the British Institute. Subsequently obtained my DIHom, DHM and a practical course in Case Taking.

I have been 'lurking' for a while and still will do that since my life is now taken up by family, grandchildren, friends, travel and starting a practice. I did want to express my gratitute and appreciation for the constributions of so many wonderful individuals on the list, in particular Dr. David Little, Joy Lucas and others, who seem to give life to this list and guide us with their gentle proddings and shedding light on principles and vital understandings regarding homeopathy. There are others who give of their time to help with difficult cases, with such seeming ease and firm grasp and knowledge of Homeopathy, who inspire us to become better and be just a little like them.

I wanted to thank Joy Lucas for sharing her case with us and taking the time to post it on the list. I will send my answer to you privately, in case others might not want to 'hear' the answers given by list-members. I am looking forward to your commentary on the case and expect to learn a great deal from it. Thanks again.

I would like to fully support these nice words of thank to all those
experienced homeopaths who so generously contribute to this list.
Being for some months on the list has increased my understanding of the art
of homeopathy tremendously.
So thank you all for that.
And Marie, if you don't mind, post you guesses about the case to the
list....we can all learn from it.

I would also like to echo my thanks, the information received via the list
is extremely valuable, much more valuable in fact than trying to source
information in text books or websites. It enables those of us who are less
experienced to learn about such things within the context of homeopathy, and
it is inspiring to hear of cases which have been treated homeopathically.

Anectdotal info & inspiration is grand.

Learning to take a case and identify useful homeopathic symptoms is
paramount.
So many people seem to miss the absolutely MOST basic thing about homeopathy
As Dr. James T. Kent (surely an experienced homeopath) said:

Perhaps if/when you do, you will begin to understand homeopathy a little
better, and understand how much MORE important is the case taking than the
disease-name.

Dave, this crusade against disease names seems to me to be getting a bit
unbalanced. Of course we prescribe on the individual in front of us, and of
course it's the §153 symptoms that we're looking for. BUT there is an
enormous amount of benefit to be gained from discussing the various remedies
found to be useful in various types of disease.

Some reasons:
i) All remedies have affinities for certain body systems and types of
complaint and this can be a useful differentiating factor in arriving at a
good prescription.
ii) We can all learn from good prescribers with a good knowledge of materia
medica. From what I've read of Joy's work, she qualifies on both counts.
iii) Without a knowledge of disease conditions, we are unable to
differentiate between what is common and what is individual.
iv) Discussion of disease conditions allows us to derive genus epidemicus
remedies.

In trying to emphasise the point that
specific-remedies-for-specific-complaints is not the way that homeopathy
approaches things, I think you're in great danger of throwing the baby out
with the bathwater. You also seem to be failing to take into account the
evident calibre of some of the people you choose to criticise on this point.
