Friends and Finrod,
Sadly (or gladly), this rat droppings story is a hoax. Your clues --
there are NO hard facts. The virus is not named (". . . there is a virus
(much like the Hanta virus)"). Also the doctor is not named, nor the patient,
nor are dates given, nor are there references to sites for more information.
Any email message that tells a story without attribution or cited sources is
a hoax. Urban Legends is a very reliable hoax ID site -- here's what it has
to say about this one -- the Urban Legends website is included so you can go
there and read the full description:

Ok

given that the virus is not named doesn't not preclude it from existing , despite nameless virus scenario questionability... it is true that Rats and mice do carry disease and removing waste materials is hazardous to health (provided susceptibility allows) not to mention your sensibilities... It is known that rats can carry listeria so washing off cans etc before storing at home and maintaining a better level of hygiene is reasonable.
Nuff said, be healthy
