traveling cat

for all you vets out there:
my daughter will be flying her cat next week and he will be cooped up
in a small carrier for about 10 hours (assuming there are no delays).
in the past he was a good traveler, but was never crated. he always
traveled on her lap and would then be ok.
she is looking for a way to sedate him, if possible, or at least insure
his staying calm.
he is about 11 yrs old, weights about 18 # and can be very clingy.
although when he lived with me, he stayed quite aloof from me and
all my kitties at the time. normally he is pretty mellow, can be
very cuddly, and while with me he wouldn't eat in public.
any suggestions?
