Re: Strontium carbonicum for joint pain

Hi all,
I have been attending Dr. Ramakrishnan's course on chronic conditions
and want to pass along a helpful clinical indication he gave in the last
session. In talking about ankylosing spondylitis, he mentioned the use
of Strontium carbonicum for "bone-on-bone" pain.
I have a patient with advanced rheumatoid arthritis who is currently
awaiting hip replacement surgery. When I first saw her, a few months
ago, she was suicidally depressed and in constant pain from a hip that
essentially is bone rubbing on bone. None of the constitutional
prescriptions I made seemed to help in a sustained way, so I finally
told her that I would reassess her after surgery. However, surgery was
delayed and her pain eventually got so bad that she was put on
narcotics, which controlled the pain but added more problems. Having no
other ideas for helping her at that point, I suggested trying Strontium
carbonicum 12C bid as a specific for temporary pain control.
She noticed almost immediate relief after the first dose of Strontium
carbonicum. She has now gone from taking Oxy-Contin 20 mg bid plus
hydrocodone prn to requiring only Oxy-Contin 10 mg bid. In addition, her
depression has dramatically improved. She sounds almost cheerful at
times, despite being confined to the house in relative inactivity and
having repeated delays in the planned surgery. Every time I talk to her,
she comments on how well the Strontium carbonicum is working and how
amazed she is at the effect. I don't think Strontium carbonicum is a
simillimum for her as she is not symptom free by any means, but It has
been a helpful palliative remedy, both physically and emotionally.
Just passing this along in case someone else might benefit from the
information...
Regards,
Arlene
