Dear Joy,

I'd like to share the joy I feel in watching the progress of one particular
patient.

I know many of you more experienced will probably have used a different
approach and welcome thoughts on how you would have treated the case.

Girl 16 came first consultation 11-1/2 months ago.

Frail, looked about 10. Extreme exhaustion, cries easily. History of achy
muscles, flu one month previous - sore throat, runny nose, ear ache one sore
then the other, pain builds up and then goes down. Flu regularly. Light
sleeper. Dizzy most of the time. nausea most days. Very low appetite. No
energy to get out of bed. missing 4 weeks at a time off school. Extreme
aching arms most of the time, feeling like they would drop off. Exhaustion,
more so on waking. Continual swollen glands and sore throat.
Sensitive to noise. Menstruation 7-10 days and painful. Crying and depressed
most of the time. Lots of headaches. Sneezes a lot. Very pale. Cycle
irregular. Too tired to go to school. Sent home after 1 or 2 hrs on days
that she goes, last few months.
Feels the heat. Large weak looking eyes. Scoliosis. has been ill for a
number of years.

At age 9 arms had swelled and there were spasms from top of shoulder to hand
and had lost 2-1/2 kgs in weight. She had been put on valium. Pale face,
whites of eyes seen below irises.

2 mnths before this incident her legs had cramped and she couldn't walk.
Legs were sore, short tendons back of both legs - heels about 4" and 3-1/2"
off the ground respectively. Could not put heels to ground at all. Achilles
had been operated on right leg in attempt to lengthen and plaster cast put n
to keep leg muscles in wanted position. Failed.

Pain legs lasted 1 year. CK count was close to 4000. Normal is around 100's.

Muscles in legs wasted over next 2 -3 summers with weight loss accompanying.
This had stabilised when I saw her.

Nervous, keeps things close to her chest. Runny nose if excited and looking
forward to something. thirsty at night.Sick fats, eats chocolate. used to
have rashes May each year. Was having lots of dairy in diet.
Gave her Sabina 6c which helped overall then pic ac 30 with overall dietary
changes after food sensitivity testing.
Herbal mix to stimulate appetite and help nausea and balance hormones i.e.
alfalfa, meadowsweet, calendula, wild yam, cramp bk, vitex, calendula,
false unicorn 1 drop daily increasing to 1-1/2ml x 2 over a long period
[this took months to get to this dose] as she is able and tablet supplement
to support immune system [cats claw, olive leaf, astragalus, siberian
ginseng, grapeseed] as well as iron supplement.
After 4 weeks there was no nausea, better sleep, dizzyness less often. Was
using pic ac if muscles sore but only 2 doses in previous 10 days. She was
put on a mix of thyroid, parathyroid 7c
After 12 weeks CK count was down to 600, no nausea, good energy, waking 6am
and going to bed 11pm. Tendons in legs lengthening, feels good. only a
little dizziness. No aching arms most of the time.
Was given phos ac 30c to take in pilule form if overly tired. Taking
occasionally.
after 16 weeks, gaining weight
After 18 weeks abundant appetite, no pain with menstruation, no nausea,
occasional dizziness
After 20 weeks, happy, full of energy, doing lots of housework [to Mum's
delight] Hasn't missed school in ages.
Still sensitive to some food. ie omelette in more than small bite will make
her feel sick. Played tennis
At 24 weeks she was strong enough to commence work on the muscles and
ligaments and address what we could of the scoliosis.
She was open to sharing more of herself and trusted what we were doing. It
was established that there was a fear of enclosed spaces and fear of being
in crowds, also of heights, the initial problem with shortening of ligaments
had occured after a shift of country away from school friends so this was
taken into account. History of clinging to older brother at school. Fear of
pains in arms returning. [Previous no information was forthcoming and mother
did not know this.]
At this stage she was put on Caust 30. 1 drop in a glass of water, 1 tspn
from that glass into 2nd glass and 1 sip from that.
The amount taken was increased sip by sip and she was given arnica 6c to
take when she felt a rush of pain in muscles as tendons started to lengthen.
Now I see her once a month towork onthe muscles. She is much more robust,
heaps of energy, pink milkmaid cheeks, no nausea, dizziness, regular cycle 4
days menstruation. Has put on enough weight and developed to now look close
to her age. Is now in shoes with heels less than 1" off the ground and if
she goes barefoot the foot of the leg that wasn't operated on actually
touches the ground most of the time, while the other is up to 1" off the
ground. Her self-confidence has soared. She is taking causticum 30, 18 drops
once a day in a glass of water and the remedy is still working. There are no
major episodes of muscle pain as the ligaments lengthen. We will work with
this to get the best result we can and probably move the remedy to 200c
shortly.

it is a joy to see her happy and now accepted by school friends as not being
different. i am constantly amazed at what homeopathy can do when we have no
preconceived ideas to stop us trying something.

Dear beverly, thanks so much for this wonderful case.

I would like to ask if we can submit it to the archive and also from my own
point of view would you be able to find the time to give some comments on
what you believed to be the centre of the case, the possible causation etc,
and I actually think the choice of Sabina was inspirational - out of
curiosity, why did you not continue with this remedy.

Thanks again, best wishes, Joy

Hi Joy,

thankyou for your comments

If you feel it is of some value that's fine to put it in the archives.

You ask why I didn't continue with Sabina. Looking back it was most likely
that the muscle pain had mostly gone at that point and the pain that was
present appeared to be actually coming from the muscle response to the
lengthening of the tendon. Also as you know sometimes you seem to perceive a
subtle shift in the patient so that you feel a different remedy may be
needed perhaps based on the logic of the case but also on intuition built up
over time from other things that you have seen. It just seemed that another
dimension needed attention.

I like to think of it like a dance. The patient is dancing a certain pattern
of steps and the remedy changes the steps slightly so that a new remedy
might be needed just as a new dance partner might be needed or the old one
would need to learn a new dance to be able to follow the patient closely
wherever the dance leads in the end.

As far as causation is concerned I think the stress of changing schools etc
was big but as I treat 3 members of this family I now know that there is a
lot of feeling of low self-esteem right through the family and parents were
brought up to never say how they felt but to put up with things. This
patient did not appear to feel as if she had a right to a place in the
world. The family dynamics are changing and it's so nice to see.

By the way thanks for your information about Roberts 'sensations as if'. I
have that book and it's great as you said. I use it a lot but for the glass
sensation in the abdomen I looked under 'abdomen' and was not thorough
enough to look also under stomach. So I appreciate your help.
