Subject: NIH study on hormone replacement therapy
To: harpers-weekly@harpers.org

Hi. The NIH study on hormone replacement therapy was not abandoned
because they found an increase in breast cancer risk for those on HRT.
This was already known. The study was cancleled because they found an
increase in heart disease risk as well, contrary to previous studies,
especially those sponsored by Wyeth, "showing" a decreased risk for
heart disease. The significance of this is that Wyeth can no longer
justify the sales of its drugs for use in HRT by claiming the
increased risk for breast cancer is offset by the decreased risk for
heart disease. This in itself is not so interesting. The
interesting thing is that the manufacturer here is Wyeth, and Wyeth
was also the manufacturer of Phen-Phen, the weight loss cocktail
removed from the market for causing heart valve disease. They knew of
this problem but failed to report it to the FDA, instead burying the
data and marketing the drug anyway- killing dozens and very likely
giving several thousand heart valve disease at some point in their
life times. The data, or references to it (I don't recall which),
were later recovered in deleted emails. So, the question is, what did
Wyeth really know about HRT...?
