N.M. Choudhuri - "A Study on Materia Medica" (Encyclopedia Homeopathica)
It is a great liver remedy and as such it should be studied in close
comparison with Bryonia, Chelidonium, Nux vom., Mag. mur., Podo., and
Mercurius.
It causes great congestion of the liver, stomach and bowels and is
generally indicated in people with swollen liver who suffer from bitter
taste in the mouth and a dull confused frontal headache as a result of the
hepatic disorder.
The enlargement causes a sort of an aching distress and a sensation of
heaviness in the region of the liver.
This is greatly aggravated by lying on the left side.
The patient exhibits a sort of repugnance to animal and rich food and
complains of a sensation of pressure as of a stone at the pit of stomach.
The stools are generally bilious, thin and offensive; the urine is
high-coloured, yellowish-red and scalding.
We also find an excess of saliva in mouth.
The pain from forehead to root of nose is characteristic.
Its resemblance to Bryonia consists in its amelioration on lying on the
right side.
The bitter taste and the peculiar thin offensive stools are common in both
the remedies.
But the characteristic thirst of Bryonia, the stitching pain due to
inflammation of the peritoneal covering of the liver, the etiological factor
of anger and the constant feeling of chilliness of the latter remedy are
wanting in Ptelea.
The stools of Bryonia have an odor of old cheese.
Chelidonium is indicated in many affections of the liver beginning from a
mere congestion to a positive inflammation.
The sharp stitching pain felt at the angle of right shoulder blade, the
peculiar tongue taking the imprint of teeth, the craving for milk, the
peculiar characteristic bright yellow or clayey stools are absent in xxxxxx
