Hi Scott,

Aspartame is *formed from* an amino acid (anyone remember which?); but it is
*not* an amino acid.
At a molecular level small changes can have *big* effects!

Hi Shannon
Yes, Aspartame is the methyl ester of the dipeptide of aspartic acid and
phenylalanine (both amino acids).

Dipeptide = 2 amino acids combined by a peptide bond. This bond is formed by a
reaction between one part of one amino acid and a part of the other amino acid.

The ester is formed as the result of a reaction as well.

So, aspartic acid reacts with phenylalanine to form a dipeptide and aspartame
is a small part of this dipeptide.

regards

Robyn

Thanks, Robyn!
But I assume that

is a typo?? Aspartame is the name of the *whole molecule*, if I understood
right, not the name of a small part?
