Hi All,

Although "vinum" means "wine" and the word was used in eclectic medicine to
mean:
(herb) "tinctured in wine" .. with the exception those very few which
refer specifically to such as vinum stibiatum (Haehl), vinum condurango
(Vermeulen), or other specific "vinum" (tincture) or vinum lactis (fermented
mare's milk) or vinum-ferri...
All references I have been able to find to *vinum* which are not specified
otherwise, and which *primarily appear in "antidote" and "relations"
sections* (which most often appear at the end of a particular MM entry),
most notably as antidote to Aconitum.. are references to Colchicum
autumnale (vinum colchici)

Refer to Hughes & Dake, Hempel, and Hale on Colchicum autumnale

It may be impossible to get this corrected in all the books of the
homeopathic materia medica, but at least it should be possible to get it
done in Encyclopedia Homeopathica's electronic texts, and possibly others..

I used the computer and Encyclopedia Homeopathica

to search thru hundreds of books, (in about 2 seconds!) to find references
to "vinum"
I noted that most references were in the area you had originally inquired
about, the "antidote" section which is normally at the end of a remedy in
MM. This made me a bit suspicious, as I have always found this section of MM
to be somewhat questionable.

I quickly scanned through the MM entries, and found the positive-linking
information in refererences to "vinum colchici" in MM of Hughes & Dake,
and Hempel in their MM entries on Colchicum autumnale. I know these to be
eminently respected authorities, and with this in mind..

I verified the consistency of this information, in terms of associating
"vinum" (with the few exceptions where it is further qualified as vinum
lactis, vinum-ferri, and others) with vinum cholchici by reading the MM, in
those locations where "vinum" is to be found, and making the judgement that
"yes, here is another reference to 'vinum' which is consistent with what I
have found about 'vinum colchici' ."

I have forwarded that information to the publishers of the three "major"
computerized MM collections and also to Dr. Shah, of Hompath. I trust the
changes will be incorporated as soon as they are verified, in the newer
releases of the various softwares.

We may never see such inaccuracies corrected in all of our printed books,
but it is not such a difficult thing to do so in computerized books.

I believe this shows very clearly that many authors have simply
unquestioningly incorporated Gibson Miller's "remedy relationships" into
their books on MM (or copied the section from others,) and is yet another
reason not to accept such "antidotes" and "follows well" without independent
critical thought.

I personally have yet to find useful information in the "antidotes" and
"follows well" section, though I do admit to having gotten pointers for
study from the "compare" section.

Up until now, our main information on remedy relationships has come from a
chart done by R. Gibson Miller, which has been reprinted in the back of
Boericke's Materia Medica. We also have all read snippets of information
from various other authors on this topic. But in this book, Abdur Rehman has
done a masterly job of collecting, from a wide range of sources, almost
everything which has been written on this topic from at least 180 authors.
Like any such collection, the information is only as good as the original
sources. The authors range from totally reliable to some I would take with a
grain of salt. But since the sources of most entries are clearly marked, it
is easy to see which to take seriously.
The book covers 665 remedies.

I hope that the book will be offered in future version of EH.

I'm a little confused with your explanation as to why Vinum refers to
Colchicum.

On looking up Vinum in an old dictionary, I found that there are quite a few
that were used 100 odd years ago. For example:

Why not Vinum absinthiatum (wormwood wine), or Vinum antimonii (wine of
antimony), or Vinum aromaticum (wine with lavender, origanum, peppermint,
rosemary, sage and wormwood), or Vinum colchici radicus (wine of colchicum
root) or Vinum colchici seminis (wine of the seed), or Vinum ergotae (wine of
ergot), or Vinum ferrum amarum (bitter wine of iron), or Vinum Ipecacuanhae
(wine of ipecac), or Vinum opii (morphine in wine)? etc....

why not just Vinum - ie Wine, white or red?

If you look up in EH you will find that Hahnemann mentions
wine as an antidote to aconite in his MM pura.

I would prefer to interprate Vinum as just wine, rather than as a specific, as
when the specific type of wine is asked for it is likely to be spelled out
don't you think?

Please elucidate me further as am interested in how you reached your
conclusion.

The info from Rehman is incorporated in Radar. It can be accessed by opening
the "Families of Remedies" repertory and typing "r" (related remedies). Most
of the info is sourced from Rehman.
