PS I don't know if Helix Tosta is soluble or insoluble???
If soluble Maria suggested a procedure. If insoluble, mortar & pestle
would be a gentle energy compared a motor energy.

Helix is a snail but not one local to me as I have read.
Traditionally it seems it would have been toasted dry before grinding down but
I have read that for home use it probably is okay to avoid that step.
Maria's post suggests, if I understand it correctly, that it be crushed in alcohol and let sit
to create a tincture. In that case why would it need grinding as in a non-soluble substance?
Maybe a combination of first grinding/shmooshing, sitting in alcohol for a couple of days? weeks?
and then making the remedy as per solubles. Otherwise, the shmooshed snails would have to
be dried in order to mortar & pestle them. Does this make sense?

Well, first.................. Homeopathy is similar not same. So Helix Tosta may be a good choice???
--------------
The shell/outer covering on the 10 year old lactose might not be as permeable as a newer one????? Don't know if this makes a difference?
Decisions, decisions...........If you chose similar you won't have to decide about lactose. LOL!

Substances that are not soluable in water or alcohol were triturated - that is ground up in milk sugar. If Hahnemann had lived long enough I believe he would have specified trituration for most substances as mineral content is not generally within a tincture. Spageristic tinctures burn the leftover tissues from making the tincture and add the ashes to the tincture in an attempt to recapture those minerals.
Toasted sponge was an allopathic remedy first. It was the iodine component that was important as that was the time of goiters and the material dose of the sponge helped with that condition.
Since helix is an animal it will lend its properties to alcohol and water.
You do not need much of the slug.

Hi Maria,
Are you saying they don't use the shell? Just the soft body?

HI Tamara – you don’t have to dry it out – you just need to triturate it in the lactose 1 part snail to 99 parts of lactose powder
I have done this with a colourful stink beetle that colonised our mandarin tree and then sprayed the tree and the stink beetles left!! Yay!!
Have also done it with blood and sputum to make isopathic remedies and have found that doing it in alcohol doesn’t necessarily get every part of the solution – only the parts that are soluble in alcohol hence I triturate to 3C then go to alcohol

Great to know Pauline.
Now how do you measure the bug : lactose powder? by volume?
And do you measure after mashing the bug?

So are you saying the material from the snail shell will NOT dissolve into the tincture or remedy?
Are you also saying if using spageristic tinctures the mineral content will not be dissolved and incorporated into the remedy?
I am also reminded of making bone broth where the bones are cooked till they almost fall apart from leaching out the minerals.
How would this concept relate to remedy making with solid material like shells.
