help for an ailing cat

my 18 year old beautiful chocolate burmese cat is very close to his
passing.
He has been deteriorating for some time. he has lost his sight, hearing,
and his smell is nearly non existent. the other night he had a spasmodic
fit where his whole body was convulsing for numerous minutes, and blood
was produced (either from his ear or nose - I wasn't there to clarify).
Since then he has stabilised to a degree.
He is terribly thin (just skin and bone) his whole body now moves when
he breathes (quick and shallow breaths), and he has difficulty moving
around, and is very unsteady on his legs.
He is extremely cold - wants to crawl into the fire, (has always been
chilly, but not as pronounced as now)
When well he was a very proud, regal, selective, chilly and placid cat.
Has always loved company.
His quality of life is now completely gone, he does not know where he
is, and cannot get to where he wants to go, he is extremely
uncomfortable. Part of my mother is wanting to put him out of his
discomfort. But rather than taking him to the vet, could I give him his
constitutional remedy to help him pass comfortably and quickly. Or
should I be looking at something else.
I am not convinced that this is within my realm of capabilities, but
wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions / experience / guidance.
Warm regards,
Vanessa
