Subject: Working with Diseases “Spun of the Soul”
To: ellen.madono@gmail.com
Please Join me for this exciting upcoming online course, in which I combine two of my long-term interests, homeopathy & mind/body medicine from the psychotherapetic/psychophysiologic perspective. Take advantage of discounted enrollment through June 23rd.
Working with Diseases “Spun of the Soul” - Psychotherapy & Psychophysiology for Homeopaths & other “alternative” healthcare providers
How, in practice, might we differentiate between diseases maintained by dynamic dysharmony, and those originating & maintained by "disturbances of the soul"?
Why/How does it matter? How does this distinction impact on the care we offer clients?
We often encounter individuals who have struggled in psychotherapy without making headway, who require attention to a dynamically-maintained disharmony, benefitting from our homeopathic interventions either in place of or complementary to counselling interventions;
conversely, we may often attempt to offer homeopathic care, without success, to individuals whose disease is "spun of the soul" (to use Hahnemann's perhaps primitive phraseology) requiring instead, or in complementary fashion, effective psychotherapeutic intervention.
in parallel to this, we may see individuals presenting with "somatic" complaints (hypertension, migraine, food & environmental intoilerances, &c.) for which learned disharmony plays an essential role in aetiology & maintainence, who might benefit more from psychophysiologic interventions than from homeopathy (or for whom which these might play important complementary roles)
How might we suspect & identify these issues earlier rather than later, in daily practice, and use these observations to effectively guide case management?
If “spun of the soul,” how might we offer effective treatment ?
(in referral, or addressing in our own practices, or facilitating self-care)
- in “so-called mental/emotional” disease? (pschotherapy)
- in “so-called Somatic disease”? (pschophysiologic interventions in "psychosomatic" illness - the domain of "mind/body medicine")
What are the dimensions of effective psychotherapy? How might we identify effective resources for our clients, and evaluate & guide their progress in psychotherapeutic interventions?
How might we coordinate care in “complicated” disease, maintained by both factors?
We'll address these questions in general, and in the context of cases collected from my practice, which has emphasized both of these issues over the past 3 decades.
Hahnemann tells us (and I rest on his authority as a careful objective observer, not as a source of dogma), in aphorisms 224-226 in the Organon, that we need to differentiate between two sources of “so-called Mental/Emotional” disease; that which arises & is maintained as a dynamic disturbance, and that which arises as a result of “faulty upbringing, bad habits, etc.”; the former potentially responding to homeopathic treatment, and the latter rather requiring “understanding, well-intentioned exhortations, consolation, or earnest and rational expostulations.”
This really is an extension, with respect particularly to complaints in the mental/emotional realm, of his aphorism 4, “He is likewise a sustainer of health if he knows the things that disturb health, that engender and maintain disease, and is aware of how to remove them from healthy people.”
As such, it is important that we extend his observation to “so-called somatic disease” that is “spun of the soul” - those diseases which are often described as “psychosomatic” or having “psychosomatic” components in origin. From a Hahnemannian perspective, this includes a great deal of the “so-called somatic” diseases that we encounter in practice, as well as a significant proportion of “so-called” mental & emotional disease.
It is essential that we discern the nature of our client’s illness in order to design effective treatment; in the case of “so-called mental/emotional disease,” “It is only these emotional diseases, which were first spun and maintained by the soul, that allow themselves to be rapidly transformed into well-being of the soul by psychotherapeutic means” (aph. 226); and it is only those that have arisen, and are maintained as a dynamic disturbance, that will respond to homeopathic treatment. In many cases we encounter dynamic disharmony is intermixed with external maintaining factors, including “faulty upbringing, bad habits, etc.,” & we may need to artfully integrate psychotherapeutic and homeopathic interventions.
In this course, Will will dip back into his longtime fascination with “mind/body” medicine, addressing both presentations described as “so-called mental-emotional disease” (anxiety disorders, depression, attachment disorders, &c.) and “so-called somatic” disease, predicated on neuropsychiatric disturbance / socioemotional stress. We’ll discuss how to assess whether a presenting complaint is principally the expression of dynamically-maintained disharmony, amenable to homeopathic treatment, versus the expression of “faulty upbringing, bad habits, etc” - amenable to psychtherapeutic/psychophysiologic intervention, or a complex admixture of these, requiring attention from both of these directions.
We’ll discuss the dimensions of effective psychotherapy for diseases “spun of the soul,” from the perspective of assisting clients with appropriate referrals, as well as identifying brief counseling interventions appropriate to our practices; and will take an in-depth look into applied psychophysiology, extending attention to “so-called” somatic presentations rooted in “disturbances of the soul,” with interventions including stress-management and relaxation training, imagery, clinical hypnosis and clinical biofeedback, with a focus on facilitating client participation in home-based practice. Forgiving Hahnemann, given the constrained understandings of his day, for suggesting such simplistic therapies as “understanding, well-intentioned exhortations, consolation, or earnest and rational expostulations,” we’ll investigate our current understandings of these disorders & their effective psychotherapies. An emphasis will be placed on interventions available to all in the role of healthcare coach, as well as how to provide ourselves with more in-depth clinical training in these areas, should we desire.
We’ll go into some depth regarding how to learn & implement psychophysiologic interventions, including relaxation therapy, mindfulness practice, visualization & biofeedback using inexpensive home-based devices, recognizing when the patient might benefit from referral to more skilled & experienced practitioners.
We'll discuss perspectives gleaned in the historical development of psychotherapy & mind/body medicine, as well as recent insights from contemporary neurobiology, psychophysiology and mindfullness research.
Although my primary audience for these courses consists of students & practitioners of homeopathy, this course will be of interest to those approaching healthcare from other disciplines as well, including bodyworkers, psychotherapists, & others.
This topic has been an interest and practice focus of Will’s since his early medical training in the early 1980s; Will has worked professionally with clinical biofeedback and applied psychophysiology since 1984, as an active participant in the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, and a core teacher of clinical biofeedback for the STENs corporation, one of the principle North American suppliers of biofeedback equipment & trainers of biofeedback clinicians, and over the past 30+ years has integrated mind/body interventions into his practice of general family medicine and homeopathy.
