Dear Ya'All,
I was floored yesterday when it dawned on me the strong similarities between Communism and conventional medicine.
Communism is powered by the philosophy called dialectical materialism. Con Med is hardcore materialistic. {“Dialectics” is a term used to describe a method of philosophical argument that involves some sort of contradictory process between opposing sides. This clearly is not part of Con Med. No opposition is tolerated.}
Communism is all about the group or the collective, the "people", and the individual (unless he happens to be in power) is ignored. Con Med accepts no evidence that does not involve large groups of people; reports from individuals is dismissed as "anecdotal".
Communism often calls itself "scientific socialism". Con Med claims to be evidence based (scientific) medicine.
Both Communism and Con Med have next to no respect for the subjective (being oh so scientific and all). This dehumanizes both of them.
Both Communism and Con Med say, believe, and act like they have a monopoly on the truth.
Because of their respective and similar world views and philosophies, Communism has killed hundreds of millions of people and Con Med has killed tens of millions of people.
Fortunately the world has gotten wise to Communism. Except for people like us here, I don't see the world getting wise to Con Med.
Just as there is a place in this world for social and socialistic solutions, like libraries, public roads, governments, drug rehab clinics, taxes, and even socialized medicine in some countries, there is also a place for some of the things that Con Med does, like fixing broken arms, gunshot wounds, and other acute and traumatic conditions. But as Inayat Khan said once, "Evil is a good thing taken too far."
I am not calling for the end of Con Med any more than I am calling for the end of socialized solutions like public roads. I am calling for balance and for the end of the state sponsored monopoly of conventional medicine.
