He demonstrated a small lack of plasticity of the rubber O-Rings in when cooled in iced water to 0 deg C / 32 deg F.
However, the air temperature at launch was 28 to 29 °F (−2.2 to −1.7 °C). But the overnight temperature had been 18 °F or −8 °C.
It can be said that the O-rings were colder than the air temperature at launch time.
Sadly the manufacturers knew about this weakness for some years.
NASA buys from the cheapest contractor!
Remember the famous quote: "I am not rich enough to buy cheap products!"

Richard Feynman (atom bomb) had a simple mind. Simple minds can see the
obvious...as in when 2000 scientists got together to figure out why the
Challenger exploded and he brings a glass of cold water and a rubber band into
the group to show them what happened to the seals.
