It sounds to me like the issues were more that (a) mom did not realize when she was over her head, and (b) her mistrust of doctors was greater than could be justified by her own ability (witness her failure to realize when she was out of her depth).

I'd call that a fear that went beyond the rational, which didn't allow her to make a clear-eyed assessment of the situation. Sad no matter how you slice it…
