Hi Shannon,

I believe it refers to the person watching a loved one who is dying. It is the time when death is inevitable, yet that state can go on for days and days.
Very emotionally taxing, death can occur at any time, cannot sleep due to the worry, agony and constant watching.

from Yasgur:

Coma vigil
a state of muttering delirium in which the person is lethargic and partly conscious, yet never actually sleeping or completely comatose. Delirious lethargy with open eyes.
From Stedman's Medical Dictionary
Coma Vigil / Akinetic Mutism
a persistent state of altered consciousness, in which the patient appears alert intermittently (demonstrates a sleep-wake cycle) but is not responsive, although the descending motor pathways appear intact; caused by lesions of various cerebral structures.

States related to or confused with Coma

Thanks Will and Lynn,

I took the rubric to mean from the caretakers view point - the rubric Night Watching means someone who was nursing an ill person.

then again, should have looked at the remedies for a hint it was for the patient. I will certainly look it up tonight.
