Dear colleagues,
This point came up during Sheilagh Creasy's master class on Saturday.
Although colleagues have become used to using the term LM, it is incorrect as in Roman numerals M =1000 and L = 50 and LM means 950 as opposed to 50,000, which is the dilution ratio of the Q potencies.

(For example V=5 and I = 1, but IV = 4 - so you take the preceding amount from the right hand letter.

Therefore LM = 1000-50 = 950)
Q = quinquagintamillesimal-potencies (A bit of a mouthful - I know!)
Please always therefore use Q rather LM potency and also please tell colleagues.

Please note:

The symbols V, L and D are *not* used to be subtracted.
LM is correct for 50,000, (if you like: L.M)

Another good reason to use “Q” is when one is writing out instructions or labels.
In handwriting, “1LM” can be confused with “1M” – there is no mix-up using “1Q” or “Q1”!!!

To further confuse... The below Roman Numeral should be the actual designation for the so-called LM or Q potency.

L| = 50,000 = quinquaginta milia

Learn the basic units of Roman numerals. Use the following (Roman to Arabic) list:

* I – 1 (One)
* V – 5 (Five)
* X – 10 (Ten)
* L – 50 (Fifty)
* C – 100 (hundred)
* M – 1000 (Thousands)

Read the Roman numerals from left to right.
If values of individual numerals are decreasing or equal, then add them together to get the value of the whole Roman numeral. For example , XVII is equal to 10+5+1+1 = 17 and XX is equal to 10+10=20.
If values of individual numerals are increasing from left to right then subtract and get the value of the whole Roman numerals. For example, IV is equal to 5-1 = 4.
If a Roman numeral doesn’t fall under any of the above explained categories, then convert it using the first category and get the value. For example, the value of XIV can be obtained as 10+ (5-1) = 14; MLM is equal to 1000 + (1000-50) = 1950.
Very large Roman numerals are expressed by placing a bar above a smaller Roman numeral. If a bar is placed above Roman numerals then it become 1000 times large. For example, a bar placed over V is equal to 5000.

These guys cannot even number!
We also have a problem on C scale with CM and MM!
