fish oils again

I found some information on that program and is said it seems as though eating
the fish itself with the other vitamins in it is better for slowing cognitive
function than the pills alone.

We can say that about just about anything. It is a good reminder that SLOW (but sure) absorption is better than fast absorption. If you take a big fat magnesium tablet, for example, it may cause a strange, gassy diarrhea. If you blend that magnesium up into your smoothie or soup, you are much less likely to get the same reaction. If you eat sugar with plenty of fiber so that it is absorbed over a longer period of time, you get a lower glycemic spike and the body stores less of that sugar as fat. The kidneys will filter out most excesses and you will pee those excesses out and waste your money, like Vitamin C. It is always better to chew slowly (and long) and absorb slowly.
Excess can be as unhealthful as deficient.
And obviously the whole fish is going to have more goodies than just the oil. It is paleo indicated to eat the whole fish. Early man did not have presses to press the oil out of it. But I don't have the time or money to eat the whole fish, so I take cod liver oil, which is better and more holistic than fish oil.
It sounds to me that NPR got infected with a pharmaceutical shill. I am 68 years old, and I have not taken a pharmaceutical product for decades. One can take care of one's self without their dreadful products. I am sure that they wish that people like me would drop dead. The feeling is quite mutual.
Sincerely,
Roger Bird

Not better, just for different purposes.
Cod liver oil is a Vitmin A and D supplement. It loses its antioxidant ability fast, as it comes in a bottle that gets air exposure each time you open it. Also if you took enough fresh cod liver oil to get the antioxidants you need, you would overdose on A and D.
So the fish body oil (as opposed to its oil in the liver) does not have the concentrted A and D as you get in liver, and when it is provided in capsules, that keeps it fresh till you get the antioxidants from it. (I do not eat the capsules, just the contents.)
(If anything, the liver oil is less holistic being only from the liver.)
Namaste,
Irene

Can't you get cod liver oil in capsules? It tastes terrible.

Ellen,
I like to save money and I like to slow down the absorption so I put it into my smoothies.

But Irene is saying that it oxidizes.

Yes you can.
I just have childhood memories of being made to drink it.

Budwig says that blending fish oil with cottage cheese does something very special for it. I have experienced, probably, the same heightened energy doing it with my kefir smoothies.
That is all that I know. I don't know what Irene said. I do know that it makes sense that if it enhances the fish oil to blend it with cottage cheese it should make sense to blend it with kefir. And if I experience a heightened energy, then that is good enough for me.
I am not attached to my opinions. But I recognize that they have merit.
Roger

I agree with you Roger.
Irene said the opposite, try not to misrepresent everything I say.
Just quote me instead please.
