Canine Pancreatitis

9 year old lab in NYC "top" vet hospital, listless, won't eat
Was told dog seems uncomfortable.
Allopathic vet says fluid around pancreas,
Online info says not much can be done if acute
Labs are said to be a breed less prone to acute pancreatitis
Any remedy ideas?

My opinion (a free speech offering):

There are four kinds of fluid that can collect around the pancreas and the diagnosis is supposed to say which one is the case:
"acute peripancreatic fluid collections," "pancreatic pseudocyst," "postnecrotic pancreatic/peripancreatic fluid collections," or "walled-off pancreatic necrosis"
Allopoathic "management" options include "conservative treatment" (do nothing but treat other symptoms arising), percutaneous catheter drainage, open and laparoscopic surgery, and endoscopic drainage.
The choice of treatment depends on a correct diagnosis of the type of fluid collection.

So failing allopathic fluid removal to either buy time or relieve discomfort, or preferably both, you are left with the option of running after the already developed issue witih a remedy, and hoping yhou have enough time to work on it before it causes too much harm.

I would suggest a matched remedy in F series as F series can be raised and used to help, faster than regular potencies.
A critical rubric is "loss of fluid" by the way. Not "swelling" or some such, to cover the fluid lost from where it belongs, and now a complication of the severe pancreatitis ( a fairly common complication).
Be sure not to feed fat in the diet more often than every 6 hours in pancreatitis, as the body needs time to digest it. DO not have a no fat diet, but use only anti-inflammatory fats like Vit E especially, and some fish oil or krill oil, and serve them with a good dose of lecithin at EVERY meal, to emulsify them.
Add all meat babyfood, it is low fat, and high protein as you want. Or make an equivalent.
Small frequent meals can help but very lean and fat only every 6 hrs or wider apart.
No, I disagree. It is not the breed that determines this but the innate constitutional type. You get all constitutional types in each breed.
You need to use the entire case, as usual, and stress loss of fluid IMO.

Namaste,
Irene

Thanks for the unique suggestions, Irene.
Unfortunately, I can't implement most of them since the owner wouldn't go much against allopathic suggestions and the dog will be returning home to the west coast soon.
The lab is being released from the hospital today and has gotten better through allopathic vet treatment including pain meds, IV, etc. Leukemia and diabetes was ruled out. Though won't know if the treatments will cause other long term issues.
The dog flies often between east and west coast as a family pet and has service dog status.
The vet MD says the dog can fly after release but will remain for a week local just to be safe in case a problem arises.
I haven't seen the dog for 2 years when I spent a weekend with him. I will be able to see the dog for the next week. At this point, I think the most helpful would be to give a one time constitutional remedy but unsure if I would be able to figure it out.
The dog is big, bulky, not a fast mover or very expressive, though I'm not familiar with basic lab behavior and temperament but seems more like a St. Bernard. He doesn't appear to get too excited when seeing those in his realm, no extreme emotional display, licking, tail wagging, etc. but will come to you and acknowledge you. When with him, he feels like a wise old sage. Don't know any particular food preferences, if allowed to choose.
What else does one look for in canine constitutionals? Don't know if more than average travel, climate changes and spending time at different homes, hotels has an effect on him, could have caused the pancreatitis, or if he'd rather me left in one place or even enjoys traveling.
In the past month, he was in Canada at a ski resort, Palm Beach, Utah, NYC, Northern California.
Maybe a Bach remedy??
