Zinc for colds

I just heard on the local nightly news that of all the over the counter
things...including vit c...the only thing that works the best for colds or
prevention is Zinc. Does anyone have an idea why zinc would help colds....and
if there might be a relationship between zinc as supplement and zinc as
homeopathic remedy?

Studies suggest Zinc shortens the duration of colds in adults by about 1.5 days (the most commonly studied regimen was a 23-mg zinc gluconate lozenge every two hours.)
Zinc should never be used via nasal spray, “A few cases have linked it to the loss of smell.”

While admittedly I haven’t paid much attention to zinc, it is widely used by many.
However, I take exception to the statement about Vit C not working or anything else
for colds. Vit C had to be taken in very high doses to be affective. Taking 1 500 mg
tablet will do nothing. Unfortunately many people have been frightened by big Phama
and its prostitute FDA regarding the necessary protocol. Also, vit D3 is a big help as
a preventative.
The homeopathic remedy zinc would need to fit the case for it to be useful

Excellent article on Zinc function here:
http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/68/2/447S.full.pdf
As a remedy it will come up if the patient's symptoms point to it.
We have SO many remedies to choose from now, and I would not use it automatically for a zinc issue, only if it matches. Energy as in a remedy - cannot replace, or provide for, a need for material Zinc.
I have used it once in overcoming a zinc overload, in two cats. The manufacturer was using zinc-galvanized food processing equipment (cheaper than stainless steel) and huge amounts of zinc were getting into the cat food. This was last year or the year before if I remember rightly. But not that long ago. It can happen again, the ingredient labels do not describe the plant equipment.
Namaste,
Irene

I think Irene is talking about an overdose of zinc. There is also the physical dose that is in the lozengers and not an overdose, zinic as a remedy and other measures you could take. Separating them is sometimes a head full. They are not all the same. As a remedy, it can be sharply aimed at specific symptoms. Used as a physical therapeutic dose the symptoms to be cured are much broader and not as deep as the homeopathic symptoms. Poisoning requires antidoting and stopping the exposure to the poisonous dose.
