Hello everyone - i used to be a member of this group several years ago, and rejoined today mainly because i have a question in mind and would like feedback. I read an article about Gunpowder recently, which is such a good general infection/blood poisoning remedy. Was thinking about how, with antibiotic resistance on the rise, it is so important that we all be very well versed in general 'infection' remedies, and what situations would call for each. i was wondering if anyone is aware of a great book that deals mainly with the core remedies for blood poisoning/septicemia and infections. i know, it will vary by the individual, but still, there are core remedies that are seen over and over. if anyone has a book they'd like to recommend, i'd be appreciative. happy new year!

In boils and absceeses you may consider the following
Normally there is a sequence of symptoms that appear before an abscess is formed and drained. Each step in the sequence has its own remedies and its own indications. For example in the first stage where the only available symptom is redness and pain and no pus formation Belladonna may abort the abscess. If there are stinging pains better by cold we may consider Apis in this stage. On the other hand if the abscess is part of a series of boils and abscesses that have been coming one after the other we have to choose from Arnica, Calc-sulph, Sulphur, Pyrogen, Anthracinum and Syphillinum, followed later by a dose of the constitutional remedy of the patient.
If the first stage is already passed then we have remedies like Pyrogen, Merc-sol, and Hepar to help us. Where the pains are excruciating we have Anthracinum and Tarantula Cubens. When suppuration is advanced we have Silicea and Calc-sulph. Lachesis if the part is very black and Phosphorous where the pus is quite bloody. Here are the indications for the most commonly used remedies. But don’t forget repeated boils and abscesses need a dose of constitutional remedy.
Anthracinum : Terrible burning of the carbuncle, succession of boils, carbuncles with fetid
pus; blackness of external parts.Arnica: This remedy is very useful in cases of boils that appear in crops (Sulph), or when boils appear one after the other. Small painful boils one after the other,
extremely sore, hard, hot and shining crop of boils. The boils may never mature they come shrivel up and another crop of bois appear.
Ars-iod and Calc-iod: In abscess of cervical glands these two remedies should not be forgotten. Even if the abscess is tubercular these remedies can abort the abscess in a short time. The difference usually lies on the fact that the Ars-iod patient is usually thin and the calc-iod patient is usually fat.
Bell: Boils before the stage of suppuration. The parts are red and extremely sensitive to touch and cold air. There is a throbbing pain. Cold air increases the pain. The pains are burning in character and any sudden motion such as a sudden jar is unbearable. The parts are extremely red, hot and swollen. The skin around the boil feels very ho to touch.
Bufo: This remedy is used in cases such as a panaratium when the pains run along a line. Pain in inflamed fingers run in streaks up the arm.
Calc-s: This remedy has been recommended in last stage of abscesses, but practically it can be used in any stage. Where there are repeated abscesses this remedy is one of our best. Again once the abscess has opened up and the pus is coming out but there seems to be no tendency to complete cure then this remedy can be thought of. The pus is yellow in colour. Kali-s has a similar indication the difference is that in Calc-s the pus will usually have some blood in it, in Kali-s blood is absent.
Gunpowder: This remedy has been highly recommended in boils. Unfortunately there are no prescribing symptoms and I don’t have much experience with it. I have used it only two times and both times it quickly got rid of the problem. In one case there were recurrent boils not responding well to the common remedies. After a few doses of Gunpowder the boils stopped appearing.
Hepar: The abscesses in this remedy are marked by their pains; violent pains, stitching pains, lacerating pains, throbbing in the abscess. The patient can not have the parts touched. Pains are < from cold air, better by hot applications. The pains are also worse at night.
Lachesis: Abscesses where the parts are black (Anthr.); Abscesses of internal parts* such as lung, ovaries, mammae, liver etc (Hippozaenium); abscesses where the parts take on a black gangrenous look; can’t bear to have the parts touched.
Merc: Slowly suppurating abscesses. The redness reminds one of Belladonna but in Merc. the beginning of pus formation can be seen. General symptoms such as Salivation, perspiration etc are usually present.
Myristica: A very useful remedy for panaritium. Unfortunately there are very few characteristic symptoms calling for this remedy. But it seems to have a special affinity for suppurations around the nails especially of the big toe.
Pyrogen: One of our best remedies to either abort an abscess or quickly mature it and cure it. This is also the most important remedy if fever accompanies the abscess. There are burning pains in the abscess (Ars-alb) and abscesses follow one another. The pains in this remedy are quite violent and make the patient quite restless. In fact Pyrogen is our most important remedy in cases of painful abscess especially where the pains are burning in character. Other remedies are there with violent pains but in these remedies the parts are usually bluish or blackish as we see in Tarentula, Anthracinum, Lachesis etc, or very red as we see in Bell. Hepar has severe pains but they are pricking or stitching in character. Arsenic also has burning pains but again there is the characteristic dark discoloration and the amelioration from warmth to distinguish it from other remedies.
Silicea: Silicea is the remedy where the suppuration continues and the wound refuses to heal. The whole process of Abscess formation is slowed down in Silicea. For example there may be a case where the abscess grows reaches a certain stage and then it stops doing anything. For weeks and months there is a cyst like abscess neither maturing nor curing. Here a dose of Silicea sets everything right. Again after an abscess has opened up and the pus keeps on discharging with no tendency to cure Silicea can be given. The abscesses in this remedy are not very painful. The pus is light coloured.
Tarantula-C: Purplish hue and burning, stinging pains are a combination calling for this remedy. Abscesses in this remedy are specially seen on the neck and in the axillae.

It doesn't cover infection specifically, but I highly recommend the Pareeks' Homeopathy for Acutes and Emergencies. This book goes well beyond first-aid.
Why not try making up your own differential diagnosis of the major remedies for infection to see how they differ?

Dale

This is also the most useful remedy in established cat bite abscesses (between cat and cat or between cats and others). Cats have a special kind of nasty mouth bacteria that may account for this frequent match.
In cats a dark skin can hide any "purplish hue" and they can not describe the stinging either. (Do not confuse with Tarent-h.) So - experience rules.
Namaste,
Irene
