Argentum Metallicum

I wish I had Joys clarity to present this case.
Last year I treated this 55 year old man for fatigue muscular aches and
pains and severe cramps starting in the feet at night.
history Diabetes since 1988
Pulmonary sarcoidosis now inactive ,was on cortisone for 10 years
History of multiple injuries, after one motorbike accident was unconscious
for 24 hours
History of liver disease {alcohol]
Kidney stones
I gave him Euphoratorum Perfoliatum for the aches and pains which I thought
were viral. Tub Bov weekly for some doses for old history of Sarcoidosis
And Cuprum Met [low potency for cramps.] This seemed to work well and he
was very pleased.
On returning to this region this year he calls and states things are
dreadful. He describes what must be Polymyositus Rheumatica, pain and
stiffness in shoulder and pelvic girdle and states he is on Cortisone . The
cortisone is causing tremendous discomfort in stomach and his glucose levels
are very high. Medication is not bringing them down. He also complains of
great discomfort around testicles. The pain around pelvic girdle still
quite severe. Can not bear touch of his underpants.
He looks Sulphur but dislikes fat and has not the 11.0 am hunger. He is a
meat eater but dislikes fat. Very open ,copes well with illness,
fatalistic, likes salt and sweet, always in a hurry, frustrated not to be
working, no fear of heights or crowds.
I find diabetes difficult to explore using Complete Repertory but looked it
up in Phatek and thought about all remedies listed. Argentum Metallicum was
there and matched the picture of many of his skeletal symptoms and as well
reported tenderness and sensitivity of testicles. It has cramps and I think
now it should have been used last year. Presently he has aversion to food
but at times excellent appetite. I only had the remedy in 30c and 1m . I
,with advice I thought we had the right remedy but could not guarantee there
would not be an initial aggravation gave him 1 dose of the 1M. He called
late afternoon to say that the testicular tenderness had almost disappeared
and that he had had a great day. It is possibly too early to claim success
and I have never before thought of this remedy in Polymyositus. On looking
back over some cases I have known in General Practice it may have helped .
As Sarcoid and Polymyositus are auto immune diseases I have introduced
Tuberculin weekly again for 4 weeks and then if in any way indicated. In
complex illness and history of old illness I fear a return of old symptoms.

Dear Jean, thanks for sending us this case and your work on it.

The theme of Argentum Metallicum is one of performance, defence and
survival. Keeping in mind that Silver is never quite as wonderful as Gold -
a second best type situation which must not be allowed to happen. They are
taught at an early age to express themselves with clarity and achieve high
status on an intellectual level. There is a lot of expectation that this
person will do well in the world and of course they try to oblige. They are
expected to show off their talents all the time - always under pressure to
achieve.

When the imbalance takes over, when the disease sets in it is when this
person cannot perform any more. anger and anxiety sets in until finally
there is a collapse. The voice goes (they become speechless and cannot
express). The limbs go weak and powerless (they cannot perform). The mental
faculties become bound up with strange impulses and can become insane (no
longer able to achive).

So initially you might get someone who is very talkative, active, showy,
hurried - then full of anxieties, communication problems, forgetful - then
the limbs become tender, sore, swollen, crampy, trembling, weak and
powerless.

Regarding repertorising Diabetes - just take the sx, even the common ones of
the disease such as frequent urination, thirsty, swollen ankles etc., and
always look for uncommon sx. And of course Arg. Met. has Diabetes.

I have to ask though why are you giving Tuberculinum??? Surely let the Arg.
Met do the work it can, as I am sure it will.

Thanks again for sharing the case with us.

Best wishes, Joy Lucas

I think that Tuberculinum is a big remedy in sarcoidosis. I think it
contributed positively a year ago. I am also fearful of opening up the
old illness. It is also evident in some aspects of his persona. You are
probably right though that I should have explored Argentum Metallicum on its
own. Thank you for your well expressed thoughts. Jean Doherty

11.Argentum Metallicum

(Metallic Silver)

This remedy cures almost all the ailments of soft bones when these bones start getting hard and thick. The bone of nose becomes fat and leads to breathing problems. Small cysts start developing in ear-bones. If these ailments are not treated in time, they become cancer of bones. Argentum Metallicum is the remedy for such cancer. It is also useful in cancer of skin.

Argentum Metallicum has a very deep effect on brain. In certain ailments of brain-cells when premature ageing is diagnosed, weakness of mind starts effecting other organs of the body, memory becomes very weak and patient starts having vertigo as and when he / she starts thinking or putting stress over mind, the patient should be treated with this remedy to secure a cure.

Argentum Metallicum is also used when muscles and nerves of legs are affected, when there are pains in legs and feet and when this pain aggravates in cold and wet conditions. If there is pain in legs and the physician cannot determine the cause, Argentum Metallicum should be tried.

Argentum Metallicum is also a very useful remedy for those who are to talk too much, like teachers, lawyers and singers. If voice starts diminishing with the passage of talk and ultimately comes to an end, Argentum Metallicum should be prescribed for success.

Merc Sol and Pulsatilla antidote this remedy. Argentum Mrtallicum can safely be used in 30C to CM potencies.

I had a patient with menier's disease sx. Dizzy with ringing in the ears, but not with nausea (yet??). I found Arg-met in the EH, when the patient told me that SRP sx of the upper left quarter of the head feels like it's lifting off when he has the dizziness. Arg-met is supposed to be for the hardening of tendons and cartilage. Robin Murphy said that there are no other remedies specific for that. My question is: Is the area where balance and something like ringing in the ear related to tendons? Later this patient had loose teeth and gum problems. I didn't try Arg-met yet, but aren't the tooth also "joints."
Sorry queer question, but maybe it makes sense to someone.
Blessings,
Ellen

Ellen-
I think you need to enquire more into the modalities- it might be
better than to go by Robin Murphy or any one else for Cartilage
specifics. meniere's is episodic which means we might be able to find
some good modalities most of the time. What kind of gum problems? Do
you have any concrete symptom/ modality based on that?
Since the one good symptom here is sensation AS IF the head feels
like lifting off - better consult Roberts or Ward for this. I had
once treated a patient with a similar symptom with Theridion- she
also had < noise / vibration symptom.
Ringing and Lifting - Bell also looks good
Vertigo with ear problems with ringing in ears is Myr.cer.
Aural vertigo is also Crotal.
Is there deafness/ stoppage?
I think you should concentrate more on the sensation and the
modalities + tooth and gum problems...

By the way, I would not call tooth - joints. I think you are trying
to fit the condition to the remedy here ;-)

Dear Hahnemannian,
I'm sorry I was not clear enough. I actually found "left upper part of the head lifting off" with dizziness by doing a word search on the EH (left head rising). It was amazing because the indicated remedies did nothing, but arg-met the menier's disease cured immediately and nothing has returned for 2 years. The gum abscess and wobbly teeth are new problems. I am wondering if Arg-met could do the same for the teeth if both places have "joints, tendons, cartilage." Using Jan Scholten's analysis, the patient could be a arg-met. But the normal repping does not lead to that conclusion
Blessings,
Ellen
