Additives in food
Roger, you make a good point about additives in food. Hahnemann always said if you don't deal with maintaining causes then homeopathy won't help in the long term.
My husband has recently been diagnosed with hairy cell leukaemia. He had a couple of mis-diagnosis, but they are certain of their findings this time. I felt angry, because I didn't know how he could have got it. Well, whenever I feel wound up like that, I usually 'sleep on it'. The first thing I did when I got up next morning was do a computer search on 'sweeteners'. I was so shocked by what I found out.
Doesn't matter what the name is: Nutrasweet, Splenda, etc. etc. etc. - it's all the same, BUT the most dangerous of all is Aspartame. It's used as an 'healthy' alternative to sugar. From all I've read, it's like a timebomb about to go off. And I notice on the TV here in the UK that the cancer charity MacMillan's are advertising an awful lot. At one time you would hardly notice an advertisement from them.
I also notice a lot of pubs selling Premium lemonade. I looked at the ingredients of the bottle when I was in the supermarket and sure enough Aspartame was listed. How many people know this? It's in confectionery, certain crisps, most all soft drinks. Sometimes it doesn't go by the name of Aspartame, but will be found as E951. It's really frightening when you consider how much food and drink is out there that contains this substance.
Here's a useful link: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/artic ... ntary.aspx
It takes a long time for the effects of aspartame to take effect. People who drink a lot of it may start off with symptoms of diarrhoea and headaches, or limb aches in general. Doctors may put it down to a virus or cold or flu or something like that. People think aspartame doesn't affect them and that it's safe to drink because they've probably been drinking the stuff for years. But it develops over time and those who think they are safe from it will find out they aren't - usually too late!
So that's food and drink.
What about medication : http://euphory.com/medications-containing-aspartame/ -
Lemsip, would you believe it? I know loads of people drink that when they've got a cold.
Throat lozenzes.
There's 81 products on that list.
http://www.janethull.com/newsletter/070 ... artame.php - loads more here, including vitamins and mineral supplements; a lot being aimed at children.
And recently, March 2013, the Daily Mail Online published the following: (they've been trying to get aspartame banned since 2005) - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... tener.html
Whilst Aspartame might be the most dangerous, they are still using MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) in food, another known neuro-toxin. And other substances as well that are just as controversial.
This is just the tip of the iceberg.
My husband always avoided sugar, thinking alternatives were better.
Needless to say, everything has now been thrown out that contains any additives, but particularly sweeteners.
Regards
Christine

Re: Additives in food
I know.
My understanding is they will be putting it in flavoured milk like chocolate and stawberry and, although by law, it will state aspartame as a listed ingredient, they don't have to warn people on the front of the bottle - where it can easily be seen - that aspartame is in it, and they will be placing it amongst the ordinary milk that doesn't contain aspartame.
And here is a list of experiments conducted, highlighting the dangers of Aspartame and saying it shouldn't be added to food - http://www.wnho.net/aspartame_genotoxicity.htm. I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that New Mexico has banned all aspartame from its food.

Re: Additives in food
not only trying to get it approved but approved for not adding it to the label at all. i believe they failed (so far) but sooner or later with the corruption of the usda and fda, they will be approved. currently if ingredients are used in the "processing" of foods but the manufacture claims they are no longer present in the finished product, they do not have to include it on the label.
example, wheat flour is often used to keep french fries from sticking but do not have to put this on the label as an ingredient.

http://www.janethull.com/newsletter/070 ... artame.php - loads more here, including vitamins and mineral supplements; a lot being aimed at children.

And there are so many additives/poisons to dodge these days we as practitioners need to educate.
Nice work on finding out about the sweeteners, Christine. I'm still amazed though at how many people do not know about this issue.
Good alternatives are organic stevia (don't suggest 'sweet leaf' brand or others with additives) and perhaps coconut sugar.
Best wishes,
Liz

I have used coconut or palm suger. I think that it is great. I tried a bunch to see if I would get a reaction like the usual sleeplessness, irritability, etc. And I did not. On the Internet it said that the glycemic load or index was 6, but at that level, and given the fact that it is almost 100% carbs anyway, the question of whether the "6" was load or index does not matter.
They really make it from the nectar of the coconut or palm flower. To my way of thinking, that makes it a wonder food. Some people have said that it cuts into the coconut crop and thus keeps people from getting good coconut products like oil and milk. But I say that the market will adjust and more short tan skinned people (like my wife) will have jobs.

the reason it is controversial is not because it is cutting into the other coconut products industry, its because the industry is exploding at such a high rate that thousands of acres of forests are being cut down in southern Asian countries. this is displacing natural wildlife habitat not to mention all the native vegetation/insects/micro-organisms/etc of which some is not know to modern man. herbal and other remedies could be lost just like what has happened in the amazon and any other place humans exploit the environment for profit.
prior to the massive explosion in coconut products most were gathered from naturally growing palms and a few cultivated farms. but this is of course very labor intensive and to get the price low, and profits high, monoculture crops are being planted in the place of highly diverse ecosystems.

We could say the exact same thing for ALL agriculture. Why not apply that thinking to all agriculture, and then watch about 6 billion or more people starve to death. that is NOT true. true sustainable organic farming has been proven over and over to out-produce any monocultured mega crops. not only do you get more volume but what you get is actually WAY more nutrient dense because you are working with nature. mono crops usually get only N. P and K fertilizer and the soil is basically dead. with sustainable organic practices you amend soil with natural materials. and it's not just having the right nutrients in the soil, its having the right life in the soil. the bacteria and other soil inhabitants is what breaks down the nutrients to make it available to the plants roots.
for example in California they have thousands of acres of almond trees which they have to ship in literally billions of bees to fertilize them for about three weeks in the spring. they have to dump a bunch of chemicals on these plants to keep them producing because you can not maintain a mono crop without adding massive amounts of what is not available to them in the soil. this year they had to bring in bees from even farther away because so many hives were lost last year in the states.
watch a video called food inc and start learning the right way to feed the masses. what the masses are eating now is not FOOD. its food like products that keep you sick, fat and nearly dead. although this is great news for the agro and phama industry, it does nothing for the health of the people or the planet.
speaking of food additives, did you know the ingredient "natural flavors" just means something added that taste like something natural???
