Minutus

Following acute episode of severe sciatic pain – lasting several weeks (mostly relieved by chiropractic and homeopathy – no pharma pain meds were used) – constipation not relieved with well selected diet and herbal remedies. Constipation is not 'normal' for this person. Anyone have experience with this? Is it a result of nerve damage?

You might look at remedies in which back pain and constipation tend to go together, like Aesculus, if other symptoms fit.

Magnesium is a nerve nutrient and you need Vit B6 to absorb it well.
So it will be very depleted after extended stress and pain, and symptoms of magnesium deficiency and of Vit B6 deficiency (in both cases) are constipation.

"Well selected diet" for this does not exist. The soils are too depleted of magnesium to enable plants to have good amounts. A supplement makes sense, suggest Magnesium chloride (MagDelay or SLowMag which have enteric coating for better absorption)...ask for it OTC at a pharmacy. Used to bowel tolerance level, it would take several days to get a good tissue level back again.
Mag chloride is better used than other forms, especially for any chronic condition (per research in Italy and confirmed by personal experience) and does not destroy the acid needed for digestion as antacid versions do.

There seems to be growing interest in Magnesium. As with Vit D, tests are
showing major deficiencies in the American public due to soil depletion and
rotten eating habits.
What about magnesium citrate as a form of Mag supplement?
I would also look at taking a probiotic supplement and paying attention
to diet in this regard. Fermented foods (real organic soy sauce, cidar vinegar,
pickles, yogurt, etc) are good sources for building probiotics.
Also, need to become more conscious of GMO in foods as they will destroy
the good gut bacteria and show to have destructive impact on digestion and
intestinal wall integrity.

Irene -- does the citrate form also cause problems? I thought that was supposed to be more stomach-acid friendly?

Thank you - the magnesium and B6 information is excellent advice and I
have her going out for SlowMag today (as well as changing her B
supplements). I remain curious about the connection between nerve
impingement and the location of her sensation of blockage. She reports
the nerve pain returns after certain physical activities, so I don't think
the structural issue is resolved at this point.

I am going to suggest the structural issue is the problem. If there is
impingement on nerves that affect the function of the intestines, there
can be dysfunctionality created.
I am sure you know that sciatica has to do with spinal alignment. That is
one path that has to be pursued. Chiropractic or DO energy treatment may
be very helpful here in releasing the pressure on the nerves. Homeopathy and
exercise can help in strengthening the soft tissues that support the spine.
Physiologically this can be a multi-step healing process.

SlowMag is a commercial drugstore product and has TWICE the amount of calcium per mg than magnesium citrate in it and that could contribute to other issues depending on patient's current calcium levels.

Better to get magnesium citrate and other forms pure, some of my favs are magnesium taurate, magnesium malate, magnesium aspartate or a blend of mags from a healthfood store, Whole Foods, etc.

Currently I'm using BlueBonnet brand which is buffered magnesium glycinate chelate considered highly absorbable. BB is more expensive and has many "free" certifications, is Vegan, Kosher, but goes on sale and is sold over web at discount.

Just dont' use any magesium oxide which is considered least absorbed and is in most commercial store brands.
