I made a stupid mistake. I ordered Ledum and Borrelia 30c by mail and today is 100deg and when I opened the package the little bottles felt hot I am so upset as my order plus shipping was not cheap. Should I consider the remedies now worthless? brit

Dear Britral,

70 degrees Celsius seems to be about the temperature that inactivates them. Unless they were far too hot to hold, they're probably okay as far as temperature goes. But I'd give them a couple of succussions sooner than later.

I am also interested how low the temperature has to be before remedies are affected.

I believe nosodes in France (maybe all of Europe) now have to be autoclaved (which I believe is 120 degrees celsius) before being potentised and while I can only think this must damage the remedy, people say they still seem to work (please correct me people if I have my facts wrong on this matter).

I know, according to information in the research paper, the meningococcal bacterium used for menigococcal prophylaxis was heat treated prior to potentisation and it still provided a protective effect.

Phew -- 120 degrees? Pretty hard on a lot of biological material!

I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I don't recall where I learned of the 70-degree limit (it's about 69 or 70 degrees). I'm sure it was in one of the physics or materials-science papers that differentiated ultrapotencies from water and from succussed water. I'll try to dig it out, but it may not be that straightforward.

I'm pretty sure we were taught the threshhold is 120 F / 49 C. Hahnemann Labs encloses an indicator "button" with mailed remedies, which turns black if the heat in the box exceeds the threshhold. But I don't know what the source for that figure would be.

Well, I've had a look and been unable to turn it up, I'm afraid. Perhaps it's safer to use 49C as the limit until somebody finds a relevant research paper. Thank you, Shannon. If such a paper comes my way, I'll try to remember to post a note about it.

Extremes of temperature would be a very simple thing to test. All we need are some of those science types to get to work with the thyroxine and tadpoles again ... as they did when testing the effect of mobile phone and microwave oven emissions on a potentised remedy.

True, and even cell cultures will do, using any of the four high-potency remedies that knocked off breast-cancer lines in vitro in the study "Cytotoxic effects of ultra-diluted remedies on breast cancer cells", >. No animals harmed!
And of course there've been a number of botanical demonstrations of high potency too that could serve, using for instance changes in wheatgrass growth rates.
I've found a single reference on the web to something that I think is relevant -- the ability of water to dissociate, which apparently ceases at above 70 degrees -- but I'm on shaky ground as to its implications, so I'm saying nothing at all about it!

100 deg F is just warmer than blood! Your remedies are perfectly ok.

If they were to be inactivated by that kind of temperature, as soon as you gave them to someone with high fever, they would become useless.
