Many years ago, just by M1 (motorway 1) in UK near the town of Luton, there was a large brick making factory with tall chimneys.
The smell from these chimneys was very pungent and I knew to turn off the car's ventilation system as I got near to them.
Eventually the was a TV programme about this factory and the fact that the cows that grazed the fields around it, suffered from arthritis and joint deformity and died early. People were also affected.
It turned out that the exhaust gases contained Fluoride compounds.
This factory was eventually closed and demolished.
