What would you call a "fact"?
It seems to me that there are plenty of facts; the history appears solid.
What would you consider more convincing?

Have you read "Plagues and Peoples"? A very scholarly and also very interesting take on the subject...
Either they have accommodated by prior exposure, or their gut flora and/or other aspects of the immune system are adequate to limit reproduction of the troublesome microorganisms.

How would you explain it?
