Hi,
This is my first time posting and I am a layperson who
has been using homeopathy for a little over 2 years
now, although I intend to begin formal study in the
fall. I am also a biologist and college instructor and
have had a strong interest in the medicinal use of
plants for over 25 years. The majority of my work has
been with animals as I run a small feline sanctuary
and maintain acreage for wild life. I also have
several reptile and amphibian habitats in my classroom
and lab.
ANYWAY, I have read and been told that species often
have an "affinity" for certain remedies. For example,
cats and pulsatilla. Also, while dealing with several
holistic vets, it seems there is a tendenacy to
prescribe homeopathic remedies in an almost allopathic
fashion. Quite frankly, I often do better in selecting
a remedy than the holistic vets! I would appreciate
your opinions.

Hi DMW,

I don;t know where you are from but in the UK it is illegal to prescribe
homoeopathically for animals unless you are a qualified vet!!

In the US, the holistic vets we use are licensed vets.
Thus you are correct in one sense, they can and do
prescribe remedies, including nosodes. However, home
use is different and all the animals I use homeopathy
for are under my care, I am their guardian. There are
literally 100s (if not thousands)of web sites where
one can purchase homeopathic remedies for animals,
including rather extensive home remedy kits. Dozen's
of books are written on veterinary homeopathy, my
favorites are Macleod. Homeopathic first aid is a must
for any animal guardian, and there are many e-mail
lists devoted to homeopathy and animals. Quite
frankly, I have found the home use of homeopathy to be
a god-send, it has helped in everything from wounds,
skin conditions, URIs, UTIs, ear infections to easing
the death process. WE are animals and homeopathy works
on us, why not for our animal family members?

Dear DMW,

It's great to hear that you're using remedies in your sanctuary. I think
you'll find their use, especially in any "epidemics" you might experience,
very rewarding- more so than the use of allopathic medicines.

Regarding your question about species' affinities for certain remedies, I
have 2 comments:
1. Just by the nature of some of the problems that cats versus iguanas
versus humans living in all sorts of conditions (climactic, social, etc.) in
various parts of the world experience, you will find certain remedies that
come up more so than others.
2. HOWEVER, ANY remedy can be used in cats, iguanas, snakes, etc. ie, you
should approach each case without prejudice, prepared to prescribe the
simillimum that that patient requires for its symptom totality.

Regarding your past experiences with holistic vets, I would refer you to the
Referral List of the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy (AVH):

The AVH certifies veterinarians in classical homeopathy- certification is a
fairly rigorous process, which includes basic training in homeopathy with at
least 50 hours specifically in veterinary homeopathy, 2 written
examinations, and case submissions. To be certified, veterinarians must
practice according to the principles laid out in Hahnemann's Organon. ie,
you would be extremely unlikely to find remedies being prescribed based on
allopathic principles if you consulted with an AVH-certified veterinarian.

the information. Unfortunately, all three AVH listings
for my state are several hours drive from here and I
already do long-distance consultation with 2 holistic
vets and a homeopath, as well as utilize an allopathic
vet, (someone has to spay/neuter, perform lab tests,

In fairness, I don't think there are many vets in the UK that deals with
homoeopathy. There was one in Bristol a few years ago who was a Master of
the subject, having studied and pracitsed it for almost 30 years, but he's
now retired and the practice hasn't replaced him. The neaest in expertise
to him is resident in Glastonbury.

I understand and agree with what you are saying: a vet does know more about
the biology/anatomy of an animal than any human being, having of course
studied it for so many years. But let's not ignore intuition. There are
many people who are not vets, have never studied the animal kingdom, haven't
a clue about a dog's or cat's anatomy etc. - but they have an affinity with
the animal kingdom, which in some cases many vets don't have!

You are right, however, to point out that it is illegal in the UK. I'm
lucky enough to have found a good homoeopathic vet, but if I lived in an
area where there was no homoeopathic vet, but I knew that someone in our
area achieved excellent results with homoeopathy - even if it was for human
beings and not with animals - I would take my animals to her or him for
advice. Yes, it would be illegal - but who the hell would know or even
care?

I'm lucky as there is a homeopathic Vet in my town and I have heard such
good reports about her from my patients so I refer anything to do with
animals to her.

Actually, it is illegal to prescribe anything by
mouth; olifaction or massaging in a remedy is not
illegal.
