Thanks very much for advice. Very useful. Didn't know cod liver oil could
be bought homeopathically.

Has anyone thoughts on how to maintain stability. I have found
Tuberculin often helps the severe manic form but sometimes it occurs
in a much milder way as sleeplessness and easy distraction.
Actually a girl I met at the market this am may respond to China
Sulph. The lows seem much more difficult and in one client sometimes
Calc Carb has helped , sometimes Platina sometimes Magn Mur depending
very much on other things going on and keynotes at that particular
time. They have helped to rescue but have not cured. It really is a
challenge and one needs a client with some insight and with good
friends. Any insights would be welcome, Thank you Jean

You forgot to add to the list a good psychiatrist and the correct pharmaceutical drug. Homeopathy only provides temporary relief rallys sometimes more. The constitutional remedy certainly helps, but my over 10 year experience with classical homeopaths and trying to reduce pharm drugs has been somewhat detrimental and more negative than positive. The main problem is remedy action and duration. For me, each administration of a constitutional remedy, I have two that work well, one more for bipolar the other more for diabetes, though both remedies aggravate both miasms, takes about 2 weeks to get to the "cure", after distinctive ameliorations/aggravations of these two inherited miasms. The "cure" only lasts a day or two. Another remedy dose requires repeating this 2 week cycle. If you reduce the pharm drugs in the interim, you are stuck in a nasty void, waiting for the remedy action to get to back to the "cure" again. Retaking the drugs also takes time for blood level changes to settle/titrate causing severe uncomfortable emotional swings. I tried LM a few times based on the idea that you could take it frequently or daily, thus trying to stay in the "cure" zone, unfortunately I found that not attainable.
Some homeopaths advocate repeating the remedy when you feel it's action wane, but again, the remedy has it's own course of action and it doesn't continue exactly where you left off. I've found a remedy's action can go on for weeks or more as it diminishes away from cure.

Certainly homeopathy can help with any acute phases, if someone is off meds, but it's natural and often desireable and advantageous to have controlled creative & productive highs and reflective insightful lows even under drug control and I've found a constitutional, anti-miasmatic remedy works well and helps overall in temporarily reducing rapid cycling, alternating between low and high, but does not cure this. Possibly, following a constitutional course from LM1-32 for a few years could theoretically help. I do believe initially my constitutional treatment helped me to reduce drug dosage but then my diabetes miasm went full blown and I've been forced to focus on that since it is more vastly destructive and that first constitutional remedy neither prevented or reduced that miasm's surge.

Also important is to realize bipolar is more than just mental and emotional, it's classified as a metabolic disorder, and affects heart rate, endocrine function, etc. Psychiatrically, there a many classifications in DSM-IV. Bipolar I, II and I think now III are the main ones. A bipolar I has had a severe episode requiring hospitalization may have gone psychotic, delusional or catatonic, had ECT/shock treatments or heavy acute drugs like Thorazine. BP II has hypermanic, hyperdepressive tendencies but has not been hospitalized . Once you have gone BP I, you will always have the tendency to relapse to that severe point. Constitutional treatment can help here. The Mercury type describes certain basic severe acute aspects though I did not find it a helpful remedy.

If you're trying to treat a BP I who thinks they will just stop meds and "do alternative", good luck.. You need to know all the phases of hyper/hypo manic depression and be able to visually observe someone very often. You should understand what a mood disorder is and be able to ask the right questions as if you were a trained psychiatrist. You can't just rely on what someone tells you on a phone consult, it's also how they tell you, speaking fast or slow, slurring speech, hurried speech, making grunting or gasping sounds, facial, arm hand gestures, sweating or not, eye contact, twitches, panting, clean shaven, showered or grungy, etc. . Then to have remedies for all these possibilities. Not so easy. BP II would be ideal candidates for constitutional treatment to prevent BP I but often they are not treated until they've gone BP I.

Hi Jean,

I would also like to hear of other people's experiences with bi-polar.

In the cases I have treated I have had to frequently change the remedy in a way I have not had to do with other illnesses, as symptoms of the imbalance change.

When relatively stable I have mainly needed the polycrests but during periods of mania or depression/aggression/anxiety I have used with reasonable success remedies such as Anac, Hyos, Plat, and Verat. I have on several occasions seen the correct remedy bring someone out of their mania within minutes.

I would love to say that the one deep-seated prescription has done the lot but I have not seen that yet - it must be possible, though.

Past experiences have now made me change the way I treat people with mental health issues who have to be medicated allopathically for their own sake and that of those around them. I will not take them on unless they have a family member, or other close person who lives with them, prepared to be part of the consultations and treatment so that I can obtain reliable information on what is happening.

Without having someone else on side who is aware of what we are trying to do homeopathically and so will support the process, the whole situation can become a nightmare as the sufferer becomes increasingly delusional and not able to follow instructions or their report symptoms and progress accurately.

Are you aware of recent findings that indicate that many of these psychiatric disorders have their cause in damaged guts and gut dysbiosis that then interferes with metabolic pathways and neurotransmitter systems? (Think vaccine, antibiotic, and heavy metal triggers). Perhaps this is the reason why some of the big gut remedies such as Calc-c and Lyc are so often needed by them and do such good work.

I would love to hear what experiences others have had as it is a very difficult area but a growing one with the wave of ASD-affected children (who frequently have or go on to experience mental health problems) entering their teens and adulthood.

Thank you Your comments very helpful. I am probably doing all I can . Wish her psychologist was not ill and the only psychiatrist who could manage her not deceased and that the Crisis Team more sympathetic. A team of professionals is required and it is a sad reflection on society that people get more and more isolated as they get older. I agree with Fran that family and friends need to be on side and in this case not an option. The ? china sulph very much milder and I think retrievable just wish we could enlist a psychologist whom she would stay with. Was wondering about Lithium Carbonate in potency and as it is a genetic disorder ?? this Des Ac we talked about recently . Some of the provings there were relevant. Certainly I think too much for one therapist to handle, Thanks, Jean

Hi Fran,

I'm interested to know - when you talk about people who have to be
medicated allopathically for mental health issues, are you also
referring to people who are on regular anti-depressants?

I usually will only take people on allopathic mental health meds if
their psychiatrist is willing to monitor the case and reduce dose as
appropriate. I haven't thought of having a family member or other
close person involved, and am wondering whether to add that - it
sounds like it could be very helpful. On the other hand - so many
people are on regular psychiatric meds these days it's difficult to
determine where to draw the line, from what point to involve others in
treatment. Could you go into a bit more detail on your take on this?

Thanks,
Vera

Many people have bi-polar problems because of sugar. Too much and it creates a high, too llittle and it creates a low.

Have you taken a full case? You might want to deal with the upper layers of possible sugar addiction first and then go for the constitutional, after.

Yes Diabetes and sugar cravings very much part of case. Saccharin has been useful especially when rocks excessively. Other of Tinus's remedies at times, Vernix, so very sensitive, Rhus tox, Carcinocin .Pathology commenced vey early in life . All help but nothing holds though she did have a 4 month remission recently actually I think induced by Plumbum Met which was relevant at the time. The sugars tend to be higher when depressed. There is an insatiable need for care. Very difficult for her to afford the right things,[still smokes ] to get out to shop,to get energy to organize things. Her car too old and unreliable. Supports are all disappearing . There are so many obstacles to cure. Uranium Nitrite in 6c some help when sugars go high. I have refused to be her General Practitioner as all I can do to do what I do ,most of which is by phone, as I no longer have what it takes to visit. Her GP provides Valium [controls it as best she can] and worries about her kidneys and eyesight etc. How can she be helped while takes Valium?/ I have confronted her on matter. Since the remedies she has avoided admission which I advise on occasion. I would like to retire from situation which has been ongoing for 10 years but she can manipulate so very well and actually has learned what works when to some extent but it is an impossible merry go round which I should extract myself from. May I ask:
Is that due to bi-polar or were allopathic drugs used? (Most of the
ones used for bi-polar CAUSE diabetes.)

She uses tricyclics which may not help but better than the antipsychotics. The bipolar did predate the diabetes but now that the question is asked not sure when the tricyclics started in relationship to the diabetes. Good question but life style diet and smoking would have been strong factors also , Best Wishes Jean
