article re believing [was: Part 1 of Paul Smith's 'investigation'

Post by Shannon Nelson »

I think relevant to this topic, this is a really thoughtful, interesting article from Mother Jones: "Fact-Free Nation: The science of why we don't believe science." (In part four he illustrates a point with a frustratingly clueless debunking of "vaccine denialists", but that is not the point of the article, so don't be distracted by it...)

I haven't yet read and digested the article fully, or I'd say more about it, but I think he raises points that we'd all do well to take in and consider. An interesting read!

Hi Shannon,

This was very interesting - especially as he / they couldn't see their own blind spot in relation to vaccine concerns.

Blind spots are like that! :-)
But it does also raise the issue that we can only make decisions based on the information we have, and evidently his information sources are different from ours.

Yes, though in his case, he isn't completely ignorant in that he acknowledges there are differences in information but rejects the other as being TOTALLY wrong - or am I now responding from my own prejudices? (Quick mental check - no, I'm right! :-) )
