Dear Homeolist,

I have received email request to elaborate on the four major remedy
reactions. I will do my best over the next days to honor these requests.

The Four Remedy Reactions, Part 1.

I have been asked by several folks to review the four major remedy
reactions and their case management procedures. As part of my "words of
warning" I must say that besides over medication too many people believe
"any reaction is a good reaction". These folks think that every reaction
after the remedy must be a "healing crisis". Unfortunately, this is not the
case. There are good reactions and there are bad reactions so it is up to
the homoeopath to know the signs very well. This is essential for good case
management. The is a detailed section on this in the final case management
lessons in HAM V4. I have written much new material for this final case
management section. It comes after we study the syphilitic miasms,
vaccinosis, cancer and AIDS.

1. The first reaction is called a similar aggravation. These is when
the symptoms present in the patient become more magnified after taking a
homoeopathic remedy. For example, the patient has a headache and the
headache gets worse. Here the remedy is correct but the posology is
incorrect. The cause of this phenomena is too large a dose (too many pills,
teaspoons or drops), the potency is too high (C or LM), or the remedy is
given when it is not needed. When all three of these causes come together
the aggravation may be very strong and prolonged. A similar aggravation is
cause when the primary action of the remedy is too strong. These three
conditions cause a similar aggravation. There are four major ways to
respond to a similar aggravation:

A. When the aggravation is mild the homoeopath can wait and watch until the
primary action of the remedy weakens and the secondary curative action of
the vital force begins. The LM potency usually does not aggravation for
long periods like the high potency Cs. Most LM aggravations caused by a
properly made medicinal solution resolve in 3 days with an improvement on
the 4th day. It is rare for them to run seven days. If the medicinal
solution is not made properly the aggravations can be long and deep.

B. If the aggravation runs more than a reasonable amount of time depending
on circumstance, the homoeopath may adjust the dose in the downward
direction by reducing the size of the dose, number of succussions, and the
potency to regularize the vital force. For example, if the 0/2 potency or
the 200c has produced a similar aggravation the patient may be given the
0/1 potency or the 30c in a very small dose with less succussions. This
milder dose often cause the VF to refocus its energy on a lower level than
before causing the aggravation to stop. Sometimes, the dose adjusted to be
milder will not only stop the aggravation but also cause the patient to
improve greatly. Be careful not to over succuss the remedy bottle in those
who are sensitive. Succussions can shake the such a patient.

C. When the aggravations is very strong or dangerous to the health of the
patient the remedy should be cancel and the new milder dose and potency
given to the patient. Remedies may be cancel by physical agents such as
coffee or camphor or dynamic agents, which are remedies that are known for
canceling the action of the previous remedy. When using an antidote the
homoeopath looks in the MM at the possible canceling remedies, lists pf
remedies like Gibson Millers of antidotes, and Boenninghausen's Concordance
of remedies. The homoeopath picks the remedy that is most similar to the
symptoms that the patient is experiencing. A remedy use for cancellation
does not need to be as similar to the symptoms as a remedy used for
curative action but it should be close.

Many homoeopaths do not understand that the size of the dose is very
critical to the action of the remedy. They tend to only think in terms of
potency. The source of this misnomer is James Kent. He thought that it did
not matter if one gives the patient 1 pill or 1000 pills because it is
still just one dose. This is because he thought the potentization was
reducing the remedy to its "simple substance" which in the Swedenborgian
philosophy has only quality but not quantity. This is totally incorrect and
contrary to common sense and the Organon.

Hahnemann realized that each pill contains a certain "quantum" of
remedial energy and that each time you added a pill it increase the
amplitude of the primary action. He wrote that too large a dose is one of
the principle reasons for causing aggravations. There are those who are
still giving a random number of pills to every patient under the illusion
that the size of the dose not matter. This is a cause of many very prolong
and dangerous aggravation, esp. when using the 200c, 1M, 10M, etc. This
same group of homoeopaths often believe that aggravations are good as well
as necessary for cure. Most of these homoeopaths don't even try to tell the
difference between a similar aggravation, a dissimilar aggravation,
accessory symptoms, and a natural healing crisis.

People of this mind set believe in the "no pain - no gain" school.
This philosophy is not in harmony with the first aphorism of Organon which
speaks of a gentle, rapid, permanent cure. Such a method is neither gentle
or rapid and may not reach a permanent cure. There is a great danger that
the remedy symptoms may be grafted onto the vital force of the patient in
such a manner that its is difficult to cure. I, and my colleagues, have
seen cases that were aggravated from months to years. Some patients are
never well since such a large dose of a correct high potency remedy. These
cases are often correct by the proper use of the medicinal solution and a
very small dose.

Hahnemann wrote in the Organon that closer the remedy and the higher
the potency the more critical the size of the dose becomes. This is when
homoeopathic remedies become more dangerous than allopathic medicines
because they can upset the vital force dynamically rather than materially.
It is very rare for one dose of an allopathic medicine (outside severe
allergenic reactions) to cause such damage to the patient.

If the homoeopath follows the precepts of the first aphorism of the
Organon they strive for a gentle, rapid and permanent cure. Homeopathy has
become a violent, invasive method in the hands of quite a few
practitioners. This is too be avoided at all costs because the homoeopathic
process becomes painful, slow and can cause permanent damage to the vital
force.

I will deal with dissimilar aggravations in the next instalment. Please
send any questions directly to the list.

Sincerely, David
