I had one printer that stopped working and had some kind of alert on it and I took it to a local guy and he said it also was a scam to get you to buy a new printer and he just reset it somehow, inside the printer.
Infuriates me

On all my printers you cannot go further - the printer will not work once it says your ink is out.
