Hi,
I am giving a Rhus-tox 6c. As a result the patient experiences symptoms that she has never experienced before. They are described in the MM of the Rhus-tox. No improvement of the main complaint for this remedy. The remedy was prescribed for a sprain, an external accident. The reaction is not totally unrelated to her constitutional problems stemming from medications. Before homeopathic treatment, the patient has been very stiff. Gradually the outer feeling of a suit of armor around her body is dissappearing. She is able to have a fever and to suffer a sprained ankle. She had no high fevers or sprains prior to the remedy. This lack of reactivity started after childhood steroid injections.
Based on acupunture evaluation and the obvious edema of her whole body, the return of blood from her feet is weak. The circulation of blood and energy in her lower body that her ankles where the sprain does not heal under acupuncture treatment. Now the symptoms of the new remedy for the sprain are symptomatic of energy rising.
The main problem with the aggravation is she is deaf in the left ear. Against my advise she has taken the new remedy for a second time. Vertigo had dissappeared before this second exposure to the 6c. After the second exposure, again vertigo (room moves), loud buzzing. She sleeps and these symptoms go away, but the major problem, loss of hearing remains. Also, there are no signs of reduction of sprain. Based on these symptoms (including the ones that have dissappeared), I will give her another remedy. The remedy that I gave her (Rhus-tox) is within her miasmatic group (based on Homeopathic Facial Analysis - Grant Bentely) and perhaps that accounts for the strong reaction. Perhaps I should stay out of this miasmatic group for the next prescription. What do you think?

Yes That is my impression. This Homeopathic Facial Analysis identification of the miasm is usually pretty acurate. Usually HFA remedies do not aggravate with remedy symptoms (unrelated to her own symptoms.) I have had trouble with her facial analysis because she has many borderline features.
She is going through a lot of other stress so Menier's disease type symptoms may have nothing to do with the remedy.

What is facial analysis?

If Rhus-tox. is her simillimum, you may have to start off even more gently. A Fibonacci series might be useful here. I'm treating a woman who's had Lyme disease for 26 years; it started at the same time as an extremely severe case of poison ivy, for which she was treated with steriods, thus suppressing evidence of the Lyme temporarily. The remedy needed was Rhus-tox., but given her history I was afraid of a major aggravation. On Dr. Roz's suggestion, I started her with a 3c and five dilution cups. It's been pretty amazing to see how deep the healing has been even at very low potencies.

Ellen, it seems to me that the situation you describe is covered by §§ 147, 207, 248, 249 (including footnotes), and 256–8. In a nutshell, Hahnemann (who must have encountered this kind of thing very often himself) advises that the acquisition of fresh symptoms may be taken as an additional guide for a more homoeopathic match, and that we should be guided toward or away from a medicine by the patient's symptomatology without fear or favour due to other considerations except that of avoiding "the employment of medicines that have already been improperly used".

That last may be worth considering a possibility if, as Dale's patient did, your patient happens to have a history of poisoning by poison ivy. That possibility aside, whatever medicine happens to be the most homoeopathic to her total state that you can find is evidently the one to use -- and if that's Rhus tox., then its further dilution, especially between doses as Hahnemann recommended, is obviously a wise move.

The most likely interpretation I can see of what occurred here, though, is that the effect of the sprain on your patient's health was not great enough to impose, on the overall pattern of her symptoms, a Rhus tox.-like state; that the Rhus tox. acted just as it would have had she not sprained her ankle. The disappearance of a symptom or two upon the first dose suggests that Rhus tox. was a near enough match to her state to act suppressively; the fresh symptoms appearing after the second dose are a clue to a more homoeopathic match. Hahnemann's advice is not to avoid a close match but to follow up by seeking to make one that's more exact, more homoeopathic.
