HARPAGOPHYTUM PROCUMBENS
[29], [94], [172], [260], [262], [309], [417], [422], [437], [522].
Harpagophytum procumbens D.C. or "Devil's claw" belongs to the family of Pedaliacae.
The most recent taxonomy classifies this family to the superior rung of Tubiflorae and in the category of Scrofulariales.
This plant (we earnestly thank to G. Sens Olive, pharmacist for the bibliographical informations that he supplied to us) is widely seen in the Kalahari savanes, is also found in the south-west of South Africa.
The plant grows on reddish sands and develops in the interval when the natural vegetation is stopped.
The characteristic of this plant resides in its fruits in the form of a plate furnished with long claws of 7 to 10 cm, growing flatly on the ground.
But the therapeutical interest is due to the root which is like a tubercle the Tubera Harpagophytum.
There are two parts: one is constituted with the root properly called, primary and a second one constituted by some growths formed on the lateral roots.
These are the secondary roots.
Alone these roots are utilised in therapeutic practice.
Tunman and Lux, in 1962 have isolated a glycoside as an active substance and of which the rough formula is C 22 H 20 010. Lichti and Wartburg were able to determine the chemical compositions.
The structure of base is Harpagide, the harpagoside being the ester cinnamic which is decomposed in the course of dry heating and emits a characteristic smell of benjoin. zorn, by means of test of an oedema caused on the paw of the rat notes a clear diminution of the inflammation.
Eichler and Koch made some researches which were compared to phenylbutazone.
It is the total extract which has an antiphlogistic and analgesic action.
The toxicity of the product is insignificant according to Moise.
G. Sens Olive has also done some researches using a dry extract of Halpagophytum prepared in the form of nebulisate.
He has administered by mouth a dose of 10 gr per kg, without any abnormal symptom.
By intraperitonial, with some dose of lO gr per kg, there is a mortality of 50% at the end of 24 h. for male rats and of 80% for the females.
Similar
results were obtained in mice.
In indiginous medicine, the Hottentots, the Borhimans and the Bantous use Harpagophytum in digestive troubles in cases of fever and as tonic.
The dry root is equally used as calmant of pain during pregnancy and for the dystosic delivery.
It has also indications of a laxative.
Harpagophytum has been introduced in Europe more particularly in Germany by a German farmer towards 1904. In our days the researches of S. Schmidt which precises the therapeutic indication.
S. Schmidt uses Harpagophytum in the form of infusion and also in ampouls (injectable) from the fresh root in 2 DH or 3 DH. On 110 patients suffering from arthritis (inflammatory), S. Schmidt prescribes the infusion of Harpagophytum with a very favourable result.
But it is to be noted that the infusion is prescribed as complement of a treatment already done.
Then on 25 patients, he has given injection loco dolenti.
The injections are painless, without secondary injurious effects.
It is the shoulders and the knees where the injection of 1 to 2 ml. of Harpagophytum was given.
Every three days an injection is given, totally six.
Harpagophytum is an adjuvant useful in grave arthritis requiring a special therapeutic.
In the form of decoction, Hoppe has used this drug in diabetes, in obesity and in hyperlipidemias of aged persons.
One may observe an amelioration of Hyper-glycemia, an appreciable lowering down and amelioration of lipidic perturbations.
No undesirable effects were observed by the decoction which is very bitter, however more or less well accepted by the patients.
In Germany it is Wilmar Schwabe who has prepared first, the Mother tincture of Harpagophytum procumbens and it is the D.H.U. (Deutsche Homoopathische Union) which prepare that drug in two forms: a pommade and injectable ampoules of 3 DH and 4 DH. In France, it is used by mouth in lower dynamisation.
In Phytotherapy, according to G. Sense Olive, it may be prescribed in the form of nebulisate, 0.5 g a dose, six doses a day.
The same author preconlses a complex formula:
Equisitum arvense nebulisate.
Spiraea ulmaria aa Harpagophytum procumbens q.s.p.
0.5 g per gelules.
Posology: Two gelules three times a day.
Advised at first empirically by W. Schwabe in the chronic osteo-articular affections, Harpagophytum has been the object of an experiment according to the method of Hahnemann by Heinz Kant on 79 persons of whom 41 men and 38 women.
Were experimented the following dynamisations: 3 DH; 6 DH. 12 DH; 30 DH and the placebo.
The placebo was given to 14 persons, 11 times by mouth, and 4 times by injection.
The experimental protocole is found in the acts of Congress of L.M.H.I, May 1979: Proceedings, 1979.

In acute clinical cases, it may be prescribed i.v. which acts very rapidly (specially in an attack of gout).
It is also prescribed in the form of an ointment always in 3 DH.
