The remedy mostly affects GI system and skin.

Sensation of emptiness in stomach with increased and
tormenting hunger is one of the important leading
symptoms of this remedy. The severe empty feeling is
not ameliorated by eating. 'Tremulous weakness and
sensation of emptiness in stomach from nursing'.

< Tomatoes

The patient experiences severe itching in skin.
Itchings are aggravated by undressing. Scratching at
first ameliorates the iching but then aggravates.

It is compares with Petroleum and Graphitis.

Apocynaceae
Remedies belonging to this family are:
1. Apocynum androsemifolium
2. Apocynum cannabinum
3. xxxxxxxx
4. Rauwolfia serpentina
5. Vinca minor
6. Strophanthus hispidus
7. Thevitia nerifolia
8. Alstonia constricta
9. Quebracho - etc
They are evergreen perennial plants growing in moist grounds or along the
river banks. Some of them are found near human habitation (Rauwolfia, Vinca
minor), while some thrive in the shade of big trees and some are climbers
(Strophanthus, Vinca). These plants are highly attractive and of great
ornamental value because of the beautiful rose-like flowers [e.g. , Rose
laurel (Xxxxxxxx) and Vinca] or their sweet fragrance (e.g. the Apocynum
flower secretes a sweet-scented fluid to attract insects).
These plants were used in ancient times for their emetic, tonic, toxic,
diuretic properties or in arrow poison because of muscle toxicity
(Strophanthus, Quebracho). Rauwolfia, Apocynum and Xxxxxxxx are also very
poisonous.
Common pathophysiological characters
I. Gastro-intestinal Tract:
They produce violent vomiting immediately after eating or drinking, empty
eructations (Apocynum, Thevitia, Vinca). Diarrhoea immediately after meals
or chronic diarrhoea with dropsy (Apocynum). Digestion paralysed leading to
undigested (lienteric) stools (Xxxxxxxx, Alstonia). It also produces strong
purgative action, as in Rauwolfia and Thevitia, which produce gushing,
involuntary diarrhoea with offensive flatus. All of them have ravenous
appetite and increased thirst with sinking, all-gone sensation in the pit of
the stomach.
Digestive disturbances as a concomitant to each and every complaint is a
hallmark of this family
II. Cardio Pulmonary System: (except Vinca).
Mainly cardiac depressants. They increase the contractibility of the heart
and decrease the heart rate through the Vagii because of the digoxin like
action of their active principle (Strophanthus is mainly the heart remedy).
Therefore we see its main utility in cardiac dyspnoea, pulmonary oedema due
to heart failure, haemoptysis and respiratory disturbances due to the same
(Apocynum is one of the main remedy for dropsy). Also used for functional
cardiac disturbances or abnormal sensations in the chest region.
III. Central Nervous System:
Strikingly, many of these remedies produce in general sedative and
depressive action on the CNS leading to stupor, unconsciousness, paralytic
conditions of the limbs, hemiplegia, lack of control over sphincters,
confusion, inability for mental work, difficult comprehension and paralysed
intellectual faculty (Xxxxxxxx, Apocynum and Rauwolfiaare the main ones for
this). Emotionally there are alternating states like anger alternating with
quick repentance, or quarrelsomeness with quick repentance (Xxxxxxxx,
Vinca). 'Excitement alternating with sadness' (Rauwolfia).
IV. Skin:
Vinca and Xxxxxxxx have extremely sensitive skin with eczema, boils,
eruptions oozing offensive discharges, hives, etc.
V. There is extreme weakness, debility, prostration and tremulousness. E. g
weak as if he would die (Vinca) and weakness of nursing woman and paralytic
weakness of limbs (Xxxxxxxx), low spirited, faints when raised from pillow
(Apocynum), debility from lack of assimilation (Alstonia).
VI. Empty sinking sensation in epigastrium (Alstonia, Xxxxxxxx, Vinca).
Oppression after meals (Apocynum).
VII. Most of these remedies have a history of alcohol or stimulant abuse.
By now the pathophysiological effects of the family Apocynaceae are very
clear but there is no sufficient proving data available in understanding the
mental characteristics. At the same time there are beautiful and fascinating
descriptions about their behaviour given in the history and botany of these
plants so we take this opportunity to understand them, through an
unconventional way.
Let us study the following phenomena:
1. Corolla of Apocynum secretes a sweet fluid to attract insects but as the
animal settles on them the petals bend inward and imprison the insects.
2. Vinca is a dwarf shrub thriving in the shade of bigger trees and is
found wild in Europe and India. It propagates itself by long trailing and
rooting stems and not only extends itself in every direction but obtains an
exclusive possession of the soil depriving other plants of their light and
air.
Witches and sorcerers used it for love philtres and potions. Also used to
induce love between man and wife if used in their meals.
One of the indications of Vinca in 'Flower Essence Repertory' is: 'It is
useful for too promiscuous, self-centred people neglecting love and
responsibility in sex, brutal and insensitive towards opposite sex after
being used.'
3. Strophanthus is a deadly arrow poison used by the natives to hunt
animals by paralysis. Secondly, though Strophanthus is a climber, it tries
to reach the tops of the highest trees.
4. All the plants are highly attractive and of great ornamental value but
are equally poisonous. (The mere presence of Xxxxxxxx in a room produces
noxious effects in its inhabitants.)
5. They very clearly produce ravenous appetite, increased desire for
stimulants like tea, coffee, alcohol, tobacco, etc.
6. Emotions in this family are not much qualified but are rather
non-specific, e.g. increased excitement, exhaltation of fancies,
irritability, restlessness, anxiety. This borders on to insanity and all
sorts of alternating states.
Thus these remedies of Apocynaceae exhibit a wild, animalistic, instinctual
and self-centred attitude where one's own needs and pleasures are met,
irrespective of any concern for the others or the surroundings.
