My friend, a homeopath, Phyllis Georgic, uses walnuts for detoxiing. This is her reply to my question about the use of walnuts.
Hi Ellen,
These is "Black Walnuts" that are used as the entire fruit, the hulls and the shell and the nut meats intact. It is extracted in water. It is how long the tincture is stored from the fall after the first frost is when the nuts are collected and then placed in large containers with the water, that is important. The extraction time is the critical part of the process. It must freeze and then thaw. This process is better if there is a hard freeze for several months and then a slow thaw with a slight refreezing every hours. This extracts the proper amounts of iodine and selenium through the process that extracts the fats of the nut meats through the exoderm of the fruit.
When extracted only in alcohol using only the green hulls there is loads that is missing in the end product and it can be dangerous in that method as well. Alcohol extraction is a not a good manner or using the tincture. You really need large quantities of the product to drink to kill the parasites that are causing you the problems and you cannot do that when it is in alcohol. Yet it is easily done without alcohol poisoning through water extraction.
The longer is sits the more it stinks but that odor is the alchemical process that brings in the quality of the finished product... Then after a few years it can also be used for the skin as a bath in the remaining very black stenchy mixture. It will tan you hide and suck out the parasites in the skin as well. It can be added to anhydrous lanolin to use as a drawing salve. There are different things that the Black walnut tincture is great for. The older stuff is great for horse, cattle, dogs and cats. Animals don't do well with iodine but are better with selenium in occasional quantities for parasite extraction as well.
Take care,
Phyllis
