Hydrocephalus is a birth defect known to be caused by a lack of folate and all too often a parasitic infection known as Toxoplasma gondii found in the feces of animals and primarily cats induces the condition.

This is a neural tube defect whereby the brain fails to form properly. The medical remedy in most cases is the installation of a drain tube known as a shunt. It is unfortunate that our society cannot come to grips with euthanasia as some defects are so severe that it can be very cruel to force a child to live with such a horrific condition. Most die eventually and for those who don't, the quality of life is often very poor. This condition is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to you. Carmi hazen
